WRAMTAS President's Message

January 2000

First of all, I want to congratulate and thank all of you who participated in the service project in October. Everyone was really impressed! The following sites were provided with the gift of music:

  • Arizona State Music Therapy Clinic
  • Casa de La Manana, La Jolla, California
  • Magnolia Gardens Retirement Home, Northridge, California
  • Rio de Las Palmas Retirement Home, Stockton, California
  • Taiko Drumming at Red Ribbon Week, Logan, Utah
  • Independent Contribution, Phoenix, Arizona (Nancy Glazier)
Once again, a big thanks to all who participated. We are currently in progress of planning a service project for the spring, hopefully we can follow the models of other regions and put together something in conjunction with our regional conference in March. We will keep the individual school club presidents updated with the information.

Also regarding the regional conference, we will be having the student song contest again this year. However, I do not have all the information and it may be coming out in the registration packet for the conference. Just keep your eyes open and we will definitely keep you posted.

AMTA has charged the students with an outreach project where students go out into the local community high schools and speak about music therapy. As far as I know, the goal of this project is to spread the word about music therapy and maybe spark some interest for students to become music therapists. I will be keeping in touch with our new AMTAS President Jennifer Young to get further details. For right now, it may occur during the spring (maybe February). It should be very beneficial for us to inform others about our profession and for our high school communities as well.

The WRAMTA Executive Committee has decided to have a joint business meeting for both professionals and students while at the regional conference in order to keep students aware of what is going on at the professional level. Because of this, there will only be one student business meeting for one hour. We have to make changes to the Constitution and By-laws and perform elections for next years officers. Due to the time limit, we are discussing having self-nomination forms, absentee ballots, and changes to the Constitution and By-laws, mailed out prior to the conference. This may be done either through e-mail or snail mail to all the student club presidents and/or University professors. This way, all we have to do is vote at the meeting and we will be able to complete all necessary business within the one hour time limit. We definitely do not want our students to miss sessions because of a lengthy meeting.

I just want to say that keeping active communication with each other is vital to the success of our organization. Officers, we need to get all the information mailed out to the students regarding the business meeting as soon as possible. For those of you have been keeping close contact, I want to let you know that I really appreciate it. Without proper communication, our region cannot get things done.

Lastly, I want to personally thank all of you who sent me donations to help alleviate costs of the conference. I am very thankful we have so many kind and generous hearts out there. The World Congress was exciting and successful. The business meetings I attended were very interesting and a lot of things were taken care of. I was very pleased to meet several of you and I'm sure that all those who attended had a wonderful learning experience. Also, I would like to thank Barbara Dunn for filling in as our advisor at the Student Affairs Advisory Board meetings, it was a pleasure to meet you.

Please keep checking our website for any new updates, it is our one source of communication to which everyone has access. I know there are many wonderful things happening at the local university level. Keep us posted so we can share the information with all the students. The address is http://www.oocities.org/CollegePark/Grounds/5460 or http://www.oocities.org/wramtas.geo/ We will soon be linked to the professional website at http://www.wramta.org      Everyone keep up the good work, I will see you in Irvine!
