Birth: 29 April 1806 in Three Rivers, Quebec, Canada Death: 18 May 1878 Lineage Note: Lemuel Cushing (Job Cushing12, Job Cushing11, Job Cushing10, Matthew Cushing9, Daniel Cushing8, Matthew Cushing7, Peter Cushing6, Thomas Cushing5, John Cushing4, William Cushing3, Thomas Cushing2, William Cushing1) Lemuel Cushing was one of the pioneers in the settlement of the Ottawa Valley, having removed in early youth to the lumbering district of Chatham, on the Ottawa River, 50 miles above Montreal. Although then (1823) but sixteen years old he opened a store and commenced business for himself with a very small capital. He underwent many severe trials, but possessed of indomitable energy and perseverance and a vigorous constitution he successfully overcame them all and attained to considerable wealth and prominence. He acted as Justice of the Peace and magistrate for over forty years, and for many years filled successively the offices of Councillor and Mayor of the Township and Warden of the County. He was three times owner of the celebrated Caledonia Springs, and in 1859 purchased the property known as Cushing's Island, Portland, Maine.
