The Swedish steamer, Hispania was built in 1912. On the 17th December 1954 she left Liverpool with a full cargo of steel, asbestos and rubber sheeting and was heading for Varberg but on the 18th the storm force winds, rain and snow became so bad that the Hispania headed into the waters around Mull for shelter. The visibility was almost nil and at around 9.00pm she hit Sgeir More. The crew managed to reverse the engines and drag her off the rocks but to no avail, she sank sometime later. All the crew got of safely except the captain who stayed onboard.

The wreck today :The Hispania now lies at 56°34.5'N , 5°59.1'W. The wreck lay undisturbed until the 1970's. She is not particularly large with a length of 70 metres and a gross weight 1337tons but she is very much intact, her stern is at 32m and her bow lies at 24m. the Hispania is densely covered from bow to stern with a huge variety of marine life including anemones, tunicates and hydroids. She is usually buoyed and is sheltered from the worst of the weather but she can get very crowded on weekends and bank holidays due to the fact that she is such an excellant wreck.
