The Orkney Islands are situated 6 miles north of the Scottish mainland, separated by the Pentland Firth. Orkney is made up off over 80 other islands of which 18 are inhabited.Between mainland Orkney and the islands of Hoy, Flotta & South Ronaldsay lies 32 square miles of ocean, this area is know as Scapa Flow. This area is legendary in the diving world due to the fact that it is the home of the largest concentration of sunken warships anywhere in the world. Scapa Flow is the resting place of the German Imperial Navy's High Seas Fleet which was scuttled here in June 1919. Most of the big wrecks in Scapa are quite deep and should therefore only be dived by experienced personnel. | ||
