The Markgraf was the sister ship of the Kronprinz and as such she was built to the same specification. She was built in Bremen by A.G Weser and was launched on the 4th of June 1913. She formed part of the Third Battleship Squadron and was involved in the conquest of the Baltic islands in 1917. Her armoury was similar to that of the Kronprinz and she had a crew of 1136. She to was scuttled on the 21st of June 1919 but during the scuttling she was boarded by Royal Marines who tried to stop her going down but during this attempt a scuffle broke out between the British and the Germans and the result of this scuffle can be seen in the cemetary on the island of Hoy. The boarding of the Markgraf was to no avail as she sank to the bottom just like the rest off the fleet.

The wreck today : The Markgraf lies upturned, resting on her port side main deck. The charted position is Lat 58° 53 31' N , 3° 09 55' W and she lies in about 45 metres of water. The least depth over her is approximately 24 metres. The Markgraf is a scenic dive with loads of anemones, sponges and crustacean life covering her hull but due to her depth your dive duration is very limited.
