The Thesis was an iron steamer and she was built in Belfast in January,1887,she was 167 feet long and had a beam of 25 feet. On a trip from Middlesbourgh to Belfast in October 1889 the captain ordered the ship to take a coarse via Scotland to avoid a storm but during this altered coarse the Thesis ran into a reef at the southern end of the sound. She was very badly damaged and quickly slid off the reef into deeper waters.
The wreck today :The Thesis is not a big wreck but she is a very attractive wreck and is well worth diving. She lies 350m North-West of the South tip of Morvern and about 50m from the shore. She lies at right angles to the shore line with the bows at 12 metres and the stern at 30 metres. The charted position of the Thesis is 56°30.03'N , 5°41.4'W and is usually marked by a small plastic buoy. The wreck which is basically intact is encrusted with marine life and has plenty of fish around her, making her a excellent and interesting dive.
