Object | What makes this one so special? |
M42 | M42 is located in Orion. M42 is the only nebula that is bright enough to be readily seen from the city. It looks like a smudge in the middle of Orion's belt. M42 is composed of the hydrogen needed to form stars. M42 is several light years across. |
Pleiades | The Pleiades open star cluster is located in Taurus. It is impossible to miss the tightly packed group of bright stars. All the stars of the Pleiades were born out of the same nebula. The Pleiades are about 400 light years away. This is why they appear so close to each other. Of all of the open clusters visible to the unaided eye, the Pleiades are by far the brightest and most beautiful. |
