Looking for Gehu Propps (or Propst), married Abigail Irvin (or Irwin) in Bath Co., VA about 1822, moved to Greenbrier Co., WV. Children: Kate, Naomi, Margaret, Mary, John, Henry, Edward. Abigail Irvin Propps' father Robert reportedly married 2ndly to an Ellen Propps. I suspect a connection to Pendleton Co. Will Dial's email is returned (2004), so he cannot be contacted. I suspect the 1840 census listing, as well as two of the four children's birth records have been mistranslated as "Jehu", when it should be "John". That is corroborated by the 1830 and 1850 census transcriptions, as well as two of the four children's marriage records, all four with mother "Abigail". No other record of a "Jehu" Propst has surfaced in this region. The Bath Co. marriage has not been verified.----Cleo.

Curiously, the only Greenbrier 1820 Propst is "Nicholas Props", over 45, with a wife under 45, and FIVE sons under ten.

Elizabeth married 6 John Propst 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 on 18 Mar 1841 in Russellville, Fayette County, West Virginia. John was born about 1808/1809. He died 7 in Feb 1870 in Sweetwater, Menard County, Illinois.
The 1850 Federal Census gives the names and ages of children that are born prior to the marriage of John and Elizabeth. This indicates there is probably a first marriage. Verification of this has not yet been found. We will continue to search for this information and in the meantime have split the family to show two wives.
