Before we get started on how to apply first-aid, lets review when you should immediately call your veterinarian.

The Merck Veterinary Manual is available for reference online.

 

Call your vet immediately if these situations are present:

1. Extensive burns

2. Difficulty breathing. (Loud, gasping, gurgling, blue tongue)

3. Blood present in urine

4. Bleeding from any part of the body will not stop, especially if it is sever bleeding

5. Horse collapses, looses balance, over reaction to stimuli. Reactions such as depression, knuckling over, staggering, walking in circles, not able to get up, muscle tremor with out sweating, rigidity, paddling movements of legs, shock and coma.

6. Fluid Diarrhea with or without blood or sever abdominal pain.

7. Sever lameness, lacerations, exposed bones, 

8. Punctures especially on the chest or abdomen.

9. Unable to pass feces, colic, abdominal pain

10. Poisoning from chemicals, bites, or plants (Try to get a sample of the poison for vet if possible)

11. Complications in foaling
