  • When I saw an X1 with a polished tail section I said, "I gotta do that!"
I found some "How-To Polish Aluminum" instructions on the Internet.

    I got the supplies necessary.
  • Jasco Paint Remover
  • Cheap Paint Brush
  • 240, 400, 600, 1000 grit sand paper
  • Steel wool
  • Mother's Aluminum Polish
  • Masking Tape

  • I masked off the area and brushed on the Jasco. It worked great. Removing the Factory Finish was a snap with the steel wool and a scraper. Get some latex rubber gloves to keep your hands protected. I went though about 10 pairs on this job.

Then I wet sanded all the way up to 1000 grit and polished with Mothers Aluminum Polish.

This picture really doesn't do the finish justice.

Unfortunatly, the shine is not quite bright enough for me. I am taking the piece down to a local polisher. He has offered to bring out the shine a little more for $20 and polish the tail section for $80. More to come on this project then.

    4/23/99 UPDATE

I had the local polisher touch up the tail section and it looks much better. It looks a lot more mirror like. One thing he said was not to use Mothers on it because Mothers would cause scratches and hazing. He recommended some chemical based aluminum cleaners. Simichrome was one.

    Take care, ride safe,
