Instruments

The instruments of ancient Mexico predate Spanish influence by thousands of years. Different tribes of Mexico used hand-held rattles made out of gourdes, turtle shells and seed pods; drums, turtle shells, clay and bamboo flutes, multiple barrel flutes, whistles, stone and wood marimbas, gourde trumpets, shell trumpets, rasps, ocean drums and rain sticks to name a few.

Below are a few pictures of the instruments Danzas de Aztlan uses at every performance. These instruments are amplified by microphones so that the audience can hear each instrument with volume and clarity.

Pictures coming soon: Mayan water drums, gourd rattles, trumpets, and rainsticks, rasps.

We feature clay and bamboo flutes by Xavier Quijas Yxayotl
Mayan water drums by musician/instrument-builder Martin Espino of Nahualli Ensemble

After many performances people have come up to us and asked our dancers if we have an album available with our music. Finally, Danzas de Aztlan is in the process of creating our first album. We are hoping that it will be for sale within the next six months.

Our album will be a blend of the instruments you can read about here on this page, along with some nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. CDs and cassettes will be available to buy over the Internet and at performances.

Please check for future updates.
