Hongbo Zhao's first pairs partner was Maomao Xie. They competed together at the 1991 Junior World Champioships where they finished 11th. After the 1991 Junior World Championships, Hongbo and Maomao split up. Hongbo teamed up with Xue Shen in 1992 and they have been skating together ever since. Shen and Zhao name Goordeeva and Grinkov as their idols. Their coach Bin Yao was the first ever pairs skater representing China. His pairs partner was Bo Luan. Together they finished 15th at the 1984 Winter Olympics and also competed in 3 World Championships together. Bin Yao and Bo Luan paved the way for figure skating in China. Currently Bin Yao also coaches Qing Pang/Jian Tong and Dan Zhang/Hao Zhang of China. Bo Luan is also a coach who coaches Yang Ding/Zhongfei Ren, the 4th pairs team from China.
