Dear Supporters of Yaak,
We have reached a successful agreement with the wilderness subcommittee of the ongoing Lincoln County Economic Development package, in which numerous community interests-schools, snowmobile play areas, lawful small-wood fuels reduction treatments in acceptable portions of the wildland-urban interface (subject to all NEPA rules and regs), a stewardship forestry project in the same, creation of a land trust to protect open space in critical public access and grizz habitat, and wilderness designation for a significant core in the Roderick-Grizzly-Pink Mountain-Saddle Complex, as well as
backcountry nonmotorized commitment to
a couple of other areas (while agreeing that snowmobile play areas in
limited portions of
NW Peaks currently used may continue, while other parts are permanently
protected as yearlong nonmotorized). We are also going to support a study
for a noncontroversial motorized route somewhere in Lincoln County. Some
folks are afraid of even this moderate proposal, so more than ever we need
Yaak supporters to speak up,
even if only with a quick e-mail, in support of Yaak wilderness.
Your support will be very vital. Please send a
short note supporting wilderness in the Yaak to the following addresses, and urge our leaders for once to stand up to the old bullying and intimidation of the past, of the kind that stripped all wilderness out of the previous (as well as current!) Forest Plan for the Yaak.
Please feel free to call the YVFC office (406-295-9736) with any questions but in the meantime, please write a quick sentence or two in support of wilderness in the Yaak and of your attachment, connection, to the Yaak--to show that there are some of us out here who share these values.
Thank you.
