Chinese New Year 2009

The Year of the Ox

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Dear YCIS Families,

I hope everyone received our save the date and introduction to Chinese New Year communication last week.  If you missed it, please visit the PO website where all CNY communications will be posted.

This week I’d like to tell you about the auction.  While it is probably obvious that the auction will help us meet our goal of raising money to support great teaching, it might not be as apparent that it can go a long way towards bringing members of our community closer together.

Silent Auction

This year we are using an online auction website!  Here is how it works:

  • Log on to http://cny.cmarket.com/ to view our auction details.
  • Check out the categories and other items for ideas of what you can donate.
  • Donate items for auction (by 12/19/08 to be acknowledged and published in the auction guide) using the easy to follow on-line process at http://tinyurl.com/YCISCNY2009donate (first choice) or attached writable pdf (second choice) which can be emailed to enochchoi@yahoo.com
  • Bid on the auction items at your convenience beginning on January 3, 2009.
  • All items that have not met the “buy now” criteria will be available for final purchase at our event on February 7th with the highest on-line bid opening the in-person silent auction.

Live Auction

Who doesn’t love a great live auction?  The rapid-fire, entertaining chatter of a professional auctioneer combined with our top 20 most valuable items will surely make for an exciting event!  What will be included?

Speaking of …Class Gifts

One of last year’s highlights was the contribution that each class made to the auction.  Fetching some of the top bids of the evening were a sentimental bench with every child’s hand print, a phenomenal class quilt, and memory game with every child’s picture.

We are encouraging parents, students and teachers to collaborate on designing and developing a class gift to contribute to the auction.  (What else needs to be said about this/  Do we have incentives or instructions?)

Friendly Class Competition

Last year, many classes enjoyed a friendly level of competition that upped the Fun in our Fundraising effort.  This year, we plan to raise that even more (the Fun, the Fun)!  One winning pre-school and elementary or YALP class will enjoy a cool, active experience during the regular YALP or school day.  The experience will be offered during an extracurricular time and provided by an age appropriate and outside vendor.  Every class is eligible and winners will be determined by a combination of participation and dollars raised.

How can I help?

  1. Donate one or more auction items as directed above.
  2. Collaborate with your child’s classmates and their families to create and contribute a class gift.
  3. Solicit auction item donations from local businesses and corporations.  Email enochchoi@yahoo.com for instructions and forms.

Next communication?  The opportunities and benefits of sponsoring this year’s event!
