A
- Aconite - Aconitum napellus; a beautiful, highly poisonous blue purple flower also known as monkshood, wolfsbane, and friar’s cap. In Anglo-Saxon, it was called thung. It was later called Wolf’s Bane, because it was once believed that arrows dipped with the juice of the plant (Aconitum lycotonum) would kill wolves. The name aconite is derived from Aconae, its supposed place of origin.
- Aging Potion - A potion that makes you older. Fred and George used it in an attempt to cross Dumbledore’s age line in GoF.
- Alihotsy - If ingested, the leaves of the alihotsy plant will cause hysteria. This effect can be counteracted by glumbumble treacle.
- Ashwinder eggs - These eggs are brilliant red and hot to the touch; when the eggs are frozen, they can be used in Love Potions or eaten to cure ague
- Asphodel - From the Greek word sceptre, it is a 3 foot high plant with white flowers and several long leaves. The root of the asphodel plant was used by Greeks and Romans to cure several diseases and as an antispasmotic. Hippocrates recommended that the roots be cooked in ashes and eaten. The root must be gathered at the end of the first year. The flowers used to be planted near tombs to provide food as they were thought to be the preferred food of the dead. See Draught of Living Death.
B
- Bat spleens - mentioned in the apothecary’s in Diagon Alley
- Beetle Eyes - mentioned in the apothecary’s in Diagon Alley; basic potion ingredient
- Bezoar - A gall stone of calcium and hair taken from the stomach of goats found in Western Persia that will counteract most poisons.
- Billywig stings - A billywig is a half-inch long, sapphire blue insect. A sting from a billywig causes giddiness and a short period of levitation. If a witch or wizard suffers too many billywig stings, the levitation may last for several days or become permanent. Dried billywig stings are said to be used in Fizzing Whizbees.
- Bubotuber Pus - A thick, petrol-smelling, yellowish-green liquid from the pustules of the bubotuber plant. Diluted bubotuber pus can be used to cure acne, but undiluted bubotuber pus should not be touched as it will cause large boils to appear on the skin.
- Bundimun secretion (diluted) - Used in magical cleaning fluids
C
- Caterpillar - An ingredient in Shrinking Solution mentioned in GoF.
- Chinese Fireball eggshells - The eggs are crimson speckled with gold, and the shells are used in Chinese wizardry.
- Confusing Concoction - Thick solution mentioned in GoF that is obviously intended to confuse anyone who drinks it.
D
- Daisy roots - An ingredient in Shrinking Solution mentioned in GoF. It is also used to cure scurvy.
- Deflating Draft - Counteracts the effects of a Swelling Solution.
- Demiguise pelts - Used to make Invisibility Cloaks. Demiguises are gorilla-like creatures covered in fine, long, silvery hair and can make themselves invisible when they feel threatened.
- Dittany - A herb that only grows in Crete that is also called eronda (love, probably coming from Eros) because of its aphrodisiac properties. It was also used for digestive problems and arthritis. The name dittany comes from the mountain Dikty (Lassithiotika) where it flourishes.
- Doxycide - An effective magical chemical that renders Doxies unconscious.
- Dragon’s Blood - According to Dumbledore’s chocolate frog card, there are 12 uses of dragon’s blood. One use could be that it relieves the stinging that accompanies a wound (Hagrid used dragon meat on his wounds). Two types of dragons are native to England, the Common Welsh Green and the Hebridian Black.
- Dragon heart - Dragon heartstrings are used in wand cores, but there are no mentioned uses of the heart itself.
- Dragon hide - Used to make gloves and some clothes. It is very resistant to spells and damage. Most dragon hide gloves and shields are made from Swedish Short-Snouts.
- Dragon horn - A highly magical substance, but there are no mentioned uses.
- Dragon Liver - Mentioned in the apothecary’s in Diagon Alley. Apparently, it’s a very expensive ingredient. Two types of dragons are native to England, the Common Welsh Green and the Hebridian Black.
- Draught of Living Death - A powerful sleeping potion made from powdered root of asphodel and an infusion of wormwood.
- Draught of Peace - A potion, when properly mixed, used to “calm anxiety and soothe agitation.” If too much of the ingredients is used, the potion can also be used to send the drinker into a very heavy sleep. The Draught of Peace is an O.W.L. level potion and therefore extremely complicated.
