  • Lacewing Flies - Used in the Polyjuice Potion and must be stewed for 21 days. Lacewings feast on aphids and other small soft-bodied insects. Found naturally in North America. Also called golden-eye flies.
  • Leeches - Water worms that feast on bodily fluids, and sometimes the muscle of worms or snails. Described in the bible as “never satisfied” and having a “craving for flesh” (Revelation 6:8). Used in the preparation of the Polyjuice Potion.
  • Leech juice - Used in Shrinking Solution. See Leeches.
  • Lobalug poison - Extracted from the venom sac of a lobalug, this can be used in many potions, but the practice is strictly controlled.
  • Lovage - Primarily used in “love-magic”. Thought to be able to attract people of the opposite gender for romantic purposes.
M
  • Mandrakes - “Love-plants” in Hebrew. Mandrakes grow naturally near Jerusalem and in some parts of Palestine. Though a fully mature mandrake will emit a cry that can kill (in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet refers to the powerful shrieks of mandrakes in Act IV, Scene III), mandrakes themselves can be used to make a powerful restorative, and is described in Genesis to have stimulating and narcotic properties.
  • Moke-skin - Used to make moneybags because the skin contracts at the approach of a stranger just like a live Moke.
  • Monkshood - see Aconite
  • Mooncalf dung - If this substance is collected before the sunrise and spread upon magical herb and flower beds, the plants will grow very quickly and become extraordinary strong.
  • Moonstone - Thought to have the powers to increase confidence, heal, relieve tension, enhance intuition, and ease mental discomfort. It is associated with the astrological signs of Cancer and Gemini. The moonstone is used in the preparation of the Draught of Peace.
  • Murtlap growth - When pickled and eaten, these will promote resistance to curses and jinxes, but an overdose will cause purple ear hair.
N
  • Nundu breath - This causes diseases powerful enough to kill villages. The nundu is a colossal, silent leopard and considered to be the most dangerous beast in the world.
O
  • Orange paste - Mends burns; no information about its ingredients.
P
  • Phoenix - A mythical bird associated with the Greek and Egyptian sun gods, Apollo and Re. It lives on mountain peaks in Egypt, India, and China; a phoenix is reborn every 500 years or whenever it feels near death. It makes a nest of wood, consumes itself in flames, and rises from the ashes. Thus, the phoenix can live to be many hundreds of years old. It is very good at hiding from Muggles as it only nests on mountains that are practically inaccessible without magic and can disappear and reappear at will. Its song can increase the courage of the pure at heart and strike fear into the impure. See Phoenix Tears. (From Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
  • Phoenix tears - Have incredible healing powers. Their feathers may be used in wands. See Phoenix.
  • Polyjuice Potion - Properly created, the Polyjuice Potion causes the drinker’s skin to bubble over and the drinker to assume the appearance of another. Ingredients include lacewing flies, leeches, fluxweed, knotgrass, powdered horn of bicorn, and shredded skin of boomslang, among others.
  • Pomegranate Juice - In Judaism, The Magic Pomegranate tells of three brothers who use a magic pomegranate to cure a sick princess. In Greek mythology, the pomegranate is also a symbol for the Goddess Persephone who ate a pomegranate while in the Underworld, and was cursed to live with Hades for half the year.
  • Purple liquid - Disinfects wounds.
