Junior Leader Training

Anybody
There was an important job to be done and EVERYBODY was sure that SOMEBODY would do it. ANYBODY could have done it, but NOBODY did it. SOMEBODY got angry about that because it was EVERYBODY'S job. EVERYBODY thought ANYBODY could do it, but NOBODY realized that EVERYBODY wouldn't do it. It ended up that EVERYBODY blamed SOMEBODY when NOBODY did what ANYBODY coul have done.

Does this sound familiar? The role of leadership is to ensure that SOMEBODY does the job that ANYBODY and do and to see to it that the job isn't left for NOBODY. The need for leadership training is to teach SOMEBODY to do the job of getting ANYBODY to do the job that EVERYBODY and do. But with out a leader, NOBODY would do it.

BSA has approved 11 leadership skills that are aimed to help Scouts progress in their roles as leaders. The folowing programs are designed to teach those skills and give a good practical application of those skills.

Silver Axe

Junior Leader Training is a must for all troops. The Grand Canyon Council offers Silver Axe, which is based off of the national JLTC staff guide. Some conference objectives include:

  • Give participants confidence and knowledge to run the troop program.
  • Give participants a working knowledge of the 11 leadership skills and help them relate these skills to thier troop.
  • To create an atmosphere where Scouts will experience Scouting at its best.
  • To enhance the relationship between the Scout and his Scoutmaster.
  • To have fun!

The course is meant to be taken by Scouts that are currently in, or expecting to be in leadership positions like Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader.

Silver Axe is held durring the summer before and after summer camp. Contact your District Executive or the council office for more information.

Junior Leader Orientation Workshop

Junior Leader Orientation Workshop, (JLOW) is a district program offered in some parts of the council. This is a short course, often only 2 or 3 days long. It is only an introductory course for basic leadership skills. To find out about a JLOW course near you, contact your District Executive.
