Summit
Block |
Shastina's
summit block is a typical Cascade volcanic plug composed of rotten
and eroded rock. From the top the views of Shastina's crater to
the north and Shasta's summit to the southest dominate the lofty
horizon. On this climb it took four hours including some breaks
to ascend from Hidden Valley to the summit. Expect a longer climbing
time if you are climbing in snow with crampons, snow shoes, or mountaineering
skis. Although Shastina is 2000 feet lower than the main climbing
attraction of nearby Shasta, the remote solitude of this less traveled
route and the respectable elevation attained compared with other
Cascade summits make this climb worth the effort. |
