Not far from Arches National Park you'll find Canyonlands National Park. If you've watched any westerns you'll recognize the landscape. The backgrounds will look very familar. John Wayne ,Ward Bond, Clint Eastwood and many others were filmed in these canyon.
Most of the photo locations you will see on this page can be accessed by a motor vehicle. To really experience this park plan on a few days. The canyons go on for miles and there are quite a few. Make sure to bring food and plenty of water if you decide to hike this area.
Islands in the Sky area is probably the most easily accessable portion of the park. These trails are not vehicle friendly. You'll need all-wheel drive, or 4 wheel drive to have a safe trip. Most of the roads are dirt and you will encounter breaks in the road, creek beds, and large rocks to drive around.
Along the Island in the Sky portion of the park you come across the "Walking Rocks Formation". Their are many things to photograph, arches, indian writings, and you might even find a dinosaur track or two.
On the last trip we took, we entered from the East end of the park and proceeded from the "Green River" area along the "Shafer Trail". It's quite a drive. The first part of the drive is a steep road with many switch backs which takes you almost straight down the side of a cliff. Enjoyable, but a little scary at times.
Once you've reach the bottom you are going to be on the "White Rim Trail" and you will pass a number of turnoffs to different canyons. Make sure you have a good map of the area. You'll want to take at least one or two of these little side roads to get a feel for the park.
Their are a ton of things you see along your tour through this park, just to name a few: Chimney Rock, Great Pyramid, Dead Horse Point, White Rim, Musselman Arch, Airport Tower, Washer Woman, Candlestick tower ... there is a bunch. Trust me.
You can see the vastness of this park in some of the photos on this page. Keep in mind that the little squirrely lines are roads, and if you see a dot on one, it's probably a RV. From the top of the Shafer Trail you might try something before you desend, especially if you have kids, what another vehicle go down the steep road first. It will look like an ant by the time it gets about half way down.
"Dead Horse Point" is a very popular place, you've seen it in car commercials, "Remember the couple sitting at the table with Dead Horse Point as the background ? I'm sure you'll recognize the area once you've gotten to the overlook.
Greg had a hard time with this rock, especially because I took too long to take the picture. NOT! Try getting a group together and surrounding the rock for a photo, should look interesting don't you think ?
Not a very good time of the day for a photo, but we were able to get a satisfactory picture out of it. Mid-day has very harsh lighting, morning would have been better.
