On to Lake Powell ...
"Canyons of Water". Thanks to Glen Canyon Dam you can Houseboat your way to Adventure. Lake Powell is 186 miles long and contains 100's of canyons to explore. Enjoy the photos and if you need information on the sites just drop us a line.
The first images you will see as you leave the Wahweap Marina will the beautiful sandstone pillars reaching out of the water. The lake is easy to fall in love with, a new adventure around every turn. When you are on a houseboat you'll have all the comforts of home, and the leisure time to enjoy it.
Remember Lake Powell is so big that it is truly impossible to enjoy the whole lake on one trip, but that's the beauty of this lake. You'll want to come back more and more to see different parts. I suggest buying a lake guide from one of the local marina shops, and picking a portion of the lake on each trip.
When you're done exploring the canyons for the day, and you retire to your home on the water, you'll be able to fish this lake if you wish. I threw my fish line in only a few times, and I was able to pull out dinner. A couple of nice sized bass.
One word of warning if you are photographing the lake while you're on the move. Use a fairly fast film, and short exposures. You'll forget the motion that is going on, and come away with allot of blurred photos. The boat will be moving only slightly, but that will be enough to take away the sharpiness of the photo. Even with a tripod, remember the tripod will be moving too.
Halls Crossing is on the North-Eastern end of Lake Powell. It's about a 12 hour drive from L.A. After our houseboating trip on the way home we spotted these Anasazi Indian ruins just off the highway. Mid-morning, terrible lighting, but we were able to get this beautiful photo anyway.
The photo left was taken from the top of "Mokee Dugway" On the road from Mexican Hat to Halls Crossing near a place called "The Valley of the Gods. From the valley floor to the to the top of Mokee Dugway at 6425 feet there's a dirt road with its switch backs goes straight up the side of a cliff, just enough room for one vehicle. As one of our ladies expressed to me after having to drive up it, "I hate you" #!/#&! (she didn't like the drive) You'll know what I mean if you ever experience it. You should recieve a T-shirt that says: "I survived Mokee Dugway".
