DESTINATION: MT LUMOT LOCATION: Cagayan de Oro INFORMATION: Mt. Lumot may have gotten his name from the main feature of its trails, which are mostly covered with "lumot" or mosses. This is one of the mountains near the vicinity of the infamous Cebu Pacific Flight 387 plane crash. It was used by the MFPI during their 17th Mid-year climb and Presidents Meeting. To go there, take a four-hour bus ride from Cagayan de Oro City (Agora Terminal) to Gingoog City. Pass by the local municipal hall for guides and information. A local mountaineering group, the KAPLAG can be contacted to assist and guide you during the climb. The exact jump-off point is at Sitio Haruray, Barrio Lunotan, 2 hours from Gingoog City. The entire expedition will last for three days. DESTINATION: MT. BALATUCAN LOCATION: Cagayan de Oro INFORMATION: Balatucan is another mountain within Gingoog City. Information can be obtained from the municipal hall or the local mountaineering group, KAPLAG. DESTINATION: MT SUMAGAYA LOCATION: Cagayan de Oro INFORMATION: Mt Sumagaya gained its popularity after the Flight 387 incident. The victims funded a monument within the mountain commemorating the said incident. To go there, you can also follow the same travel procedure and arrangement as that of Mt. Lumot. DESTINATION: MT CANDALAGA LOCATION: Davao INFORMATION: Maragusan is a 4-hour trip from Davao City. From Maragusan town proper, proceed to Barangay New Albay, which is a 15 trip. You can get guides and porters from this Barangay. The trek to the summit of Mt. Candalaga will take 1 and a half days. You can either back track to base camp or descend to a different route passing by Tagbibinta Falls before reaching the end of trail at Agkawan Cold Spring Resort. You can allot three days for this expedition. For details, you can contact members of the Davao base mountaineering group, Sandawa Apo or the Department of Tourism Region XI at numbers (6382) 2216955 and 2210070. Their office is located at Magsaysay Park in Davao City. DESTINATION: MAS-AI PEAK LOCATION: Agusan INFORMATION: One of the least known but promising trekking destination in Mindanao, Mas-ai peak offers spectacular views as well as unforgettable encounters with the wide variety of Philippine wildlife. The usual destination point during hikes is a small pond called Lake Belwang. Jump-off point is at the town of Cabadbaran which is accessible from Butuan City. From Cabadbaran, take ajeep to Sitio Pirada. You can secure your guide from here. You can contact the local outdoor group, the SAK-A mountaineers for assistance. Another alternative jump-off point is via Barangay Telesforo also from Cabadbaran. It is advised to take the two routes for going up and down respectively for you to experience both routes. DESTINATION: AGUSAN MARSH LOCATION: Agusan Del Sur INFORMATION: The Agusan Marsh Wildlife is one of the premier Eco-tourism destinations in Agusan. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1996, this 19,000 hectares park serves as the catch basin of Agusan-Davao Plain in Eastern Mindanao. It is considered as the biggest marsh in Philippines and contains 15% of the fresh water of the country. 49% of the area is swamp forest while the remaining portions are lothic and riverine ecosystem. It is one of the significant wetland ecosystems in the country. In Agusan Marsh, one can go for river safari and bird watching. Purple herons, storks, sea eagles, wild ducks and many endangered species can be seen in the area especially in the months of November, December, and January. DESTINATION: MT. MAGDIWATA LOCATION: Agusan Del Sur INFORMATION: This mystical mountain stands 633 meters high, perfect for a fun climb for regular mountaineers. It is San Franciscos sole-source of potable water supply and a recipient of the DENRs reforestation program dubbed as "Billion Tree Act." It has an area of 1,658 hectares covered with lush green forest and an array of wild, rare tropical flora and fauna. A scenery of nature in perfection, the mountains peak offers a panoramic view of Agusan del Sur and its neighboring provinces. Looking at a distance, Mt. Magdiwata poses as a backdrop of San Francisco. DESTINATION: MT MALINDANG LOCATION: Misamis Occidental INFORMATION: Declared a national park on June 19, 1971, Mt, Malindang National Park covers 53,262 hectares. From Oroquieta City, take buses bound for Dipolog and alight at Barangay Mutia. From Mutia, take jeep bound for Barangay Mansawan which is the jump-off point. Trek to Duminagat Lake where you can secure your guide. From Duminagat, the trek tot he summit will take 8 hours. You can descend to Malen Falls or you can take a different route going to Liboron, Tudela and Tongo is Ozamis City. Either way, you can climb from this point. DESTINATION: AGUSAN FALLS LOCATION: Agusan del Sur INFORMATION: There are numerous falls within the Agusan del Sur province. The municipality of Sibagat has its Manogong Falls. Rosario has its Binaba-Biga Falls, Trento has Dumanon Falls, Bunahawin has its Bolong-bolongan Falls and Pagpag Falls, La Paz has its Motong Falls and San Luis its Minting Calong Falls. DESTINATION: MT PARKER LOCATION: Davao Del Sur INFORMATION: Mt. Parker became popular last 1995 when it hit the headlines due to the collapse of a portion of its wall killing some of the locals living within its slopes. From Davao, catch buses bound for Marbel. From Marbel proceed to Surallah. From Surallah continue towards Tboli and a final ride to Barangay Salacafe will take you to the jump-off point. The climb not only offers scenic views but rich cultural interactions with the T'boli people. DESTINATION: MT MATUTUM LOCATION: Davao INFORMATION: One of the strato-volcanoes of the country, about 70 kilometers south-southwest of Mt. Apo is a well-preserved 2,293-meter high cone named Matutum (which in the local dialect means "has fired or burnt out"). At the top is a 120-m deep and 320-m wide crater, breached by three gorges and covered with dense growth. An unconfirmed report states that Matutum was smoking on March 7, 1911. However, several authors believe that the volcano is dormant. To get there, take a bus from Davao City to General Santos City. Then from Gen. Santos, take jeeps going to Tupi. Finally a tricycle ride to Barangay Lambisong will take you to the jump-off point where you can also secure some guides. DESTINATION: MT HAMAGUITAN LOCATION: Davao Oriental INFORMATION: From Davao, take buses bound for Mati Davao Oriental. Then from Mati, take jeeps bound for Maputi, which serves as the jump-off point. You can also proceed to La Union from Mati as an alternative trail to climb Mt. Hamaguitan. The highlight of the climb is a destination 300 meters above sea level called the Tinagong Dagat, which is a lake nestled at the middle of the virgin forest. DESTINATION: GUMABON FALLS LOCATION: Davao INFORMATION: From Davo City, take a bus bound for Tagum. Then from Tagum transfer to jeeps bound for Mabini. From Mabini, Barangay Bunglas is an hour away via tricycle. You can ask the locals from Bunglas Barangay Hall for directions. DESTINATION: SANDAWA FALLS LOCATION: Davao INFORMATION: From Davao City, take a bus bound for Cagayan and alight at Ipol. From Ipol, you can already ask the locals for the trailhead. An alternative route is via Barangay Namnam.
