Pine ConesPine Cone Fire StartersHave the girls collect old candles and crayons from home. Melt similar colors together in a double boiler. Tie strings around pine cones and have the girls dip them in the wax. Combine several colors of pine cones in a mesh bag and tie with a decorative ribbon. Be sure to save a few for the troop, you never know when you might need a fire starter!Pine Cone OrnamentsMost of these ideas work well with the balls from Sweet Gum trees too!Spray pine cones with adhesive and roll them in glitter. Insert a ribbon around the base to hang it by. Spray pine cones with adhesive and roll them in fragrant spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice). Insert a ribbon around the base to hang it by. Add white snow paint to the edges and glue a clip to the bottom. Spray paint them green and decorate as mini Christmas trees. Pine cones are everywhere this time of year so start early. As a troop go for a walk near your meeting place chances are you will find some.
Other Holiday Ideascourtesy of McCormick SpicesPomander BallsThis project can be very expensive, but will last for years if done correctly.
1 orange, lemon or lime per girl Stud thin skinned oranges, lemons or limes with whole cloves. Use a nail or skewer to start holes for cloves. Add row after row until fruit is covered.Mix the spices with the orris root or other preservative and roll the clove covered fruit in this mixture.* Decorate with ribbon or gather a square of Tulle around it and tie it at the top. Hang it to dry in a cool dry place (takes several weeks). It may be possible to use a dehydrator but I have never tried it. Cinnamon Stick BundlesGlue together 3 cinnamon sticks in a bundle. Tie with a festive ribbon, add a few dried flowers. Use as ornaments or to add that special touch to a present.Cinnamon OrnamentsNo baking and very simple!Mix 3/4 - 1 cup applesauce with 1 4.12 oz. bottle of ground cinnamon to form a stiff dough. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters, make hole for ribbon. Carefully transfer to rack to dry. Let air dry for several days, turning occasionally. Makes 12 great smelling ornaments. * I have added these from the original printed by McCormick because every time I have tried them without a preservative they have molded.
