Troop 807
Hayward,
California
What's the Troop Been Doing??
Troop
807 is always doing something. Either we're camping, learning something new,
helping the community or the church where we meet, or raising funds to do all
of the above, we have a great group of involved scouts and parents. Check out
what we've been up to, or check out what we've got planned.

Oakland Raiders
BSA Golf Tournament - Some
of our scouts were invited to help out at the 5th Annual Oakland Raiders
Invitational Golf Tournament to benefit the Boy Scouts. The scouts greeted the
players and checked in their golf bags. Many corporate players had the chance
to socialize and play a round of golf with current Oakland Raiders and several
of their legendary players while the scouts had a chance to meet their football
heroes and collect several autographs. See if you can guess who these players
are:

Jonathan C's
Eagle Project - Jonathan
designed his project to help a local emergency shelter that relocates families
to new housing. When the family move into this transitional housing, they are
provided a basket of cleaning supplies to help the family keep their new home
clean. The shelter was low on these cleaning supplies, so Jonathan asked local
residents to donate more. Check out some of these photos:

Josh K's Eagle
Project - Josh's
project (inspired by fellow scout, Bryan H's bout with bone cancer) was to
increase the amount and broaden the variety of the reading and viewing material
for teens and children at the local hospitals and shelters. His wildly
successful project was covered by local newspaper and KPIX television news. Check out
some of these photos:

Scout-O-Rama - Scout-o-rama was held June 3rd at a new
location (Kennedy Park in Hayward), but the Troop 807 Dutch Oven cooking still
had them lined up for miles. Head Chef, Mr. Long, had his crew produce several
fabulous entrees and desserts. Other Troops put on demonstrations that varied
from speed pitching to arm strength to building catapults. You also had the
chance to slide down a zip-line or make duck callers.
Those who asked for copies of
the recipes, please visit this site: http://www.macscouter.com/Cooking/DutchOven.html. It's one of the best sites for Dutch
Oven Cooking around.

Service Project
at Yosemite - Where
better in the world to work??? Yosemite is spectacular and, because we're
volunteers, they gave us the best campground in the Park!
Here's some pictures of the Crew:

Skiing at

spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, we had a near perfect day of skiing.

Nick F's Eagle
Project - Nick had a
wonderful idea to help those in need during this cold winter; he'd gather all
the coats and blankets he could and the redistribute them to the needy. Check out

Summer Camp on
Maui - After a lot of
work and planning, we finally pulled it off! Summer camp on Maui was all it was
expected to be. After we landed at the Kahului Airport and picked up some
supplies at the local Costco, we set up camp and prepared for a late night
pickup for our first adventure. At 2:30 am, three vans from Mountain
Riders Bike Tours
appeared at camp to take us to the top of the Haleakala Volcano to watch the
sunrise then an exciting 38 mile ride down the volcano on bicycles! What a cool
trip - from an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet to the ocean - all downhill!
Thanks to Brian and his crew for a real adventure.

Back to camp to sign up for
merit badge classes and start the "normal" part of summer camp in the
most fabulous, tropical setting.

Friday brought the end of
merit badge sessions and another adventure. It was off to Molokini to do a
little snorkeling.

Adam K's Eagle
Project - The Eden
Area YMCA in Hayward has had a problem for many years. But, thanks to Adam's
organization skills and perseverance, it's now easier to drive thru the
facility. Adam recognized that, since the YMCA is built on the side of a steep
hill, the hillside kept sliding down into the driveway that connected the two
sides of the facility. Adam rounded up the equipment, the materials and the man
(and woman) power to replace an inadequate retaining wall and replace it with
one that will last through many El Nino years. Click below and check out Adam's
work.

Our Trip to The
Rock - This was
supposed to be our campout to Tilden Park in Berkeley as well as a visit to Alcatraz,
but El Nino strikes again! The weather had been great all week until it came to
the weekend. We decided to cancel the campout, but (since the tickets had
already been paid for and the weather was supposed to be good for at least
Saturday) we met early and went for a tour of "The Rock". (Sorry
ladies, Sean Connery wasn't there.) The tour was great; everyone running around
the island with their headsets on, following the guided tour. The weatherman
was wrong again. Instead of raining that night, it started raining as we
boarded the ferry back to San Francisco. That changed the location for lunch
from picturesque Pier 39 to the inside of the car for the drive home.

Our Trip to the
Snow - Our ski trip
turned out to be just a play day in the snow thanks to El Nino. The weather
didn't cooperate for skiing, so we loaded up the snowballs and had at it. Our
luge teams, thanks to the snowplow guys, would rival the Olympic competitors.
The evening was spent playing cards, several board games, and videos. Thanks to
the Kinkades for the use of their cabin and arranging the use of their
neighbor's cabin.

Train
Trip to Sacramento (Click here for photos) - On January 24th, the Troop caught the
7:02 am Capitol Express from Hayward to Sacramento. From the train station, we
hiked over to the State Capitol building and checked out the historical offices
in the building and watched the "Making of the Capitol" movie. We
then were given a tour of the State Assembly Chambers. After lunch in the park
behind the Capitol, we hiked back to Old Town Sacramento and toured the
Railroad Museum. Then, with a slight hesitation, we turned them loose on Old
Town. Luckily, everyone made it back on time and we caught the train home. Too
bad the pizza delivery in Davis didn't work out.
49er Fundraiser - For
the past two years the parents of Troop 807 have volunteered to work a
concession booth at San Francisco 49er home games. This year we've worked all
preseason, regular season, and playoff games as well as two SF Giants baseball
games. The parents have earned over $15,000 to help the troop and send their
sons to this year's summer camp in Maui. The photos below were taken at the NFC
Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers on January 11th, 1998.

Firehouse #1 - The troop had a chance to visit the
brand new, $3 million Hayward Firehouse #1. After a tour of the new facilities,
we even got to slide down the fire pole.

Tree Trimming
at the Masonic Home - Helping
out the residents decorate a Christmas Tree in one of their communal areas.

John G's Eagle
Project - Several scouts, family and friends
helped John G. help out at the Spectrum Community Center of Hayward. John's
project has us clean out a vacant lot, tear down a dilapidated deck, build
raised planter boxes (so the Center can grow vegetables to be used in their
meal programs), raise a new sign, and plant decorative shrubs.

Jonathan W's
Eagle Project - A
hard-working group of family, friends and scouts helped Jonathan rebuild a
trail at the Sulphur Creek Nature Center in Hayward. Near the top of a rugged
trail, Jonathan's project has us clear away a fallen retaining wall, rebuild
the trail, shore-up the trail to prevent further erosion, replace the old
retaining wall (with one that rivals the Great Wall of China), and provide
access to the picnic area above the trail by installing a spiral staircase.
It's beautiful; drop by sometime.

July 1996
Summer Camp at
Camp Chawanakee - The
Troop sent 22 scouts to summer camp at Camp Chawanakee at Shaver Lake, CA. A
great time was had by all, including the leaders/parents who attended. While
the creeping crud and overwhelming dust slowed a few scouts down, everyone
worked hard on earning merit badges and improving their ranks,

Thanks
to Matt P. for the pictures.
