View of the valley patch     Winter in Yosemite.  December 1988 was the first and only time so far that I have had the privilege of being in Yosemite National Park in the winter.  It was a glorious winter on top of that.  As you can see from the pictures, the snow was very heavy in the valley which is right around 4,000 feet.
We were staying in a rented cabin near the Wawona area of Yosemite which is located in the southern part of the park near the Mariposa Grove of big trees.  The drive into the valley from there on ice and snow was slow, but that suited us fine since we were enjoying the scenery so much.  The trees were covered with snow and it made for tough photography.  There was a lot of reflected light to work but I was able to get some really good winter pictures

The 3 Brothers in winter

As you drive into the valley, The Three Brothers first make their appearance across the Merced River on the left.  The clouds helped make this particular shot more spectacular.

This is probably my all-time favorite picture of Half Dome.  The light was perfect, the snow magnificent.  It just ended up being an almost perfect picture.  I think the only thing that would have made it better would be if there had been some clouds overhead.  This shot was taken from Sentinal Bridge which leads away from the village area.

Inspiration Point in winter

We drove into the valley on several days during this trip.  The view from Inspiration Point has always been stunning, but was even more so during the wintertime.  There wasn't much water coming over any of the waterfalls at this time.  There was just a trickle at Bridalveil which you can just see on the right.

I put this particular picture in because I liked the way the snow was tufted on top of the rocks at the side of the Merced River.  They give the impression of "snow mushrooms."  Even though it got cold at night, daytime temperatures were warm enough to keep the river from freezing over.
