Shed Hunting

Shed Hunting is just one of the many activities related to deer hunting that can be done in the 'off season'.  It is an excellent way to learn more about your hunting areas, and a great way to get some much needed winter exercise.  But above all, sheds are fun to find, if you have the patience.  Most of the hunters in our group spend many hours a year looking for shed antlers, and have some impressive sheds to show for the time that we put in.  Most of our sheds are found in January, Febuary, and March in bedding areas, and other deer 'wintering areas'.  Sheds are very difficult to find, and a matched set of antlers should be considered a true 'trophy' to any shed hunter.  All of our sheds are from wild, huntable bucks, most of them have been found on public land.  I haven't taken pictures of them all yet, so there is many, many more to come.

Jordan Dahl holds a beautiful 60+ inch four point shed. This shed
has a 12 inch G-2 tine, and was picked up by a relative in Southern WI.

18" 8 POINT BUCK.  FOUND DEAD, 1998.

CARIBOU ANTLER, CINNABAR CREEK ALASKA.  JORDAN DAHL, 1998.

This large, very symmetrical buck was found dead by Mort and Jordan Dahl in 1993.  The 10 point rack has a net score of 161 4/8 and has less than 2 inches of deductions.  When found, the rack was still in perfect condition, the hide however couldn't be saved, luckily a suitable cape was found so the buck could be mounted.  What caused this great bucks death is still not known.

We found this buck dead in one of our hunting areas this year.  This buck is a massive 11 pointer with everything a hunter could ask for.  I estimate the buck would have scored around 140-145" typical.  The buck had been dead for quite some time when we found him and we weren't able to tell how he died.
