The A1 motorway cuts through the middle of County Durham from north to south.
You can exit for Bishop Auckland to the A68, A689 or A688. The A689 is the road indicated on my Bishop Auckland walks map.

The A68 offers the best access to The Upper Derwent Walk both from north and south. From the Newcastle area the A692 is probably the most direct route.
