Morse Code Game

morse.gif (3557 bytes)

This is a top secret mission to send important messages quietly and accurately using Morse Code.  Morse Code was invented by Samuel F. B. Morse in 1832 and was initially used to send messages short distances using a telegraph running on electricity.  Morse Code was adapted later on to be sent over radio waves and between spotlight blinkers on navy ships.  Morse Code is made up of a series of dit's and dah's, where dit's are dots and dah's are dashes.

This material can be used to fulfill partial requirements for the Tawny Star.

The year is 1899.  You are assigned to the the Mohawk Communication Corps, a unit established to send messages for Colonel Baden Powell's 5th Dragoon Guards stationed in South Africa.  Your task is to send secret messages across the battlefield (room) with no noise or voices - in Morse Code.

1. You are assigned into Communications Sections of four - with each section made up of two teams - a SENDING Team and a RECEIVING Team.

2. Each team has a SCRIBE who writes or decodes the message and a SIGNALMAN who sends or receives the message

3. The Sending Team:

4. Sending rules:

5. The Receiving Team:

6. At the end of the message the Receiving Team will report back to the Colonel with the messages.  The team who gets the most messages correct wins the game

7. Remember to keep quiet - whisper.  You don't want to give any information to the enemy.  This is top secret

8. Be accurate
