Rangitoto Island   —   26 June 2005

Written by Bruce

Steve was to take this trip, but had a golf tournament to attend to: perhaps our next Michael Campbell?

The day dawned absolutely superb, not a cloud in the sky. After the last few days, it was a refreshing change. A group of sixteen assembled on the Rangitoto Wharf after the thirty minute boat ride from Auckland. Margie had joined the boat at Devonport — what some people will do to avoid paying parking fees in town. However much to Margie’s disgust we enlightened her than there was, in fact, free parking available on Sundays.

From the wharf, we turned left and took the Lighthouse Track to McKenzie Bay, the only sandy beach on the island. From McKenzie Bay, it is uphill all the way to the summit. Lunch was taken at the summit. The clarity on this day for Auckland was unusual as the whole circle offered superb views. Very noticeable was the rapid housing expansion of Auckland.

From the summit, we started the downhill trek. A detour was made to explore the Lava Caves, and another short detour was made near the bottom around the Kidney Fern Glade. All too soon, it was time to leave this unique and beautiful island. The pest eradication of a good number of years ago has certainly made a remarkable difference to this island.

Due to the strong southerly winds and low tide, our boat had to make two attempts at berthing. However, we were soon back on the mainland and “civilisation”.

Thanks to those who came along and helped make another great day’s outing.

Footnote: The club went to Rangitoto on 6th July 1980. The return fare was $3.60. The return fare today was $18.40.
