Starting Drills

A Guide For New Keepers With Clueless Coaches

OK, so you're a goalie. It's your first year. You want to get as good as you can. You approach your coach: "Could we do some drills that'll help me improve my skills?"

"Sure, kid! So, uh...Got any ideas?"

A lot of coaches no next to nothing about the role of a goalkeeper (the same goes for equipment managers, which is why goalies are often stuck with bottom of the barrel dud equipment). And what's even worse is that some of them don't even care! I've been lucky: most of my coaches have gone to the internet or asked around when they were in doubt. But some coaches are just, well...

If you've got one of the clueless coaches, do not fear! I have found some excellent sites with some good basic drills for goalkeepers. Take a look:

Hockey Tasmania: Goalie Skills and Drills

Hockey Tasmania: Elements of the Save

Planet Field Hockey: Specific Drills for Goalkeepers

Seriously, this will be MORE than enough for a long time to come! There's gazillions of drills at those places!
