low power - hi importance
Every city needs a brave local radio station like B-92. Indeed, station like this can point problems in local areas, inform people dictate trends in arts and culture, a station that'll serve you directly, maybe even run by you directly, or at least, you will know most of the people who work there. You could hear the beast people in the city talking and performing. Those station could shape completely different set of values for the local cominities, minimizing the bad influence of high powered tv stations and nation-wide programs. The result would probably force politicians to modify their appereances, promises and actions. Giving back the music power to local media, we may get similar result to the one in Eighties, when collage radios forced major houses to make deals with bands like Husker Du, Replacements, REM, fIREHOSE, etc... College stations and college newspapers are possibly the first one that could easily transform themselves into radio stations like proposed, but then those college media would have to increase the quiality of thier program, talk about local and global problems in a critical way, start actions, in other words start waking up the city. Professors and deans should allow changes like that. Universities would clearly have a benefit of that. Understandably, authorities which are afraid of changes would probably try everything to stop low power radio. So, the struggle for such radio would probably be hard. I recognize the enthusism to change things better in actions of the Low Power Radio Coalition. They started many actions, wrote many letters to the authorities asking for low power radio. It's easy to help those good people. Spend some time on their home-page and see what you can do. If you already have such a radio in your community, let me know, I would like to link you to my web page, hear about your progam and write about you. Let's try and make low power radio reality. |
