Bring donated goods to Nepal

Volunteer work

In 1999 I went trekking in Nepal and so loved the place and people that I decided to go back and do some voluntary work. I return to Nepal each year, staying about two months each time.

If you also love this Himalayan country and are looking for ways to give back, please read on. You may gain some insight from this website and start your own projects and voluntary work, or you can bring donation in the form of materials or cash to the projects I support in the Tourist can Help and Volunteer Opportunities section.

      1) Material Donation

The need for goods donation varies from clothing, stationeries to household goods.

Guidelines for material donation

a) Think simple and plain. Be culturally sensitive.

b) Be durable and environmentally friendly. Adhere to ecological principles (avoid plastic wraps, non-biodegradable containers, multiple small packages, glass bottles, etc.). Remember, Nepal is not a garbage dump site for useless materials.

c) Recommendation for clothing items : Shirts, Jackets, sweaters washable knits, long pants, heavy winter clothingschool fees including english books, educational toys, good plastic building blocks and uniforms, general assistance in household goods such as bed linen, towels, flannels, soap and toothpaste. The above items would preferably Click here for details.

Note: Clothing must be culturally appropriate. In a conservative society like Nepal, women do not wear sleeveless tops, shorts and short skirts. Business attire such such as suits and ties for men, and suits or dresses for women are impractical for this mountainous and agriculture-based country.

We only accept new or used clothing in good condition. Remember to check for any tears, stains, holes or odors that the items may have. Please clean the clothes in order to respect the dignity of those receiving them.

d) Recommendation for stationeries : pencial, pens (refillable), rulers, rubbers, note books, school bags, art supplies, Science books, astronomy, math, history, travel and picture books (It is desirable to avoid culturally charged topics such as Sesame Street, Disney, etc.)

e) Recommendation for household goods : bed linen, towels, flannels, soap and toothpaste (avoid battery-operated items)

      2) Cash Donation

Purchasing locally is a way to support the local economy and is often more suitable to the local needs. You can also sponsor the education of individual children, please contact me or send the money directly to the organizations listed under Volunteer Oppoturnities.

      3) Bring donated goods to Nepal

If you are travelling to Nepal it'd be appreciated that you could bring some clothing, stationery, etc. Your help would save a great deal of transporation cost. Please read the guidelines of goods donation before you bring them to Nepal.

Each time I visit Nepal Thai Airlines very generously gives me an extra 30kgs in baggage allowance. You'd also need to make prior arrangement with airlines for additonal baggage allowance.

In Kathmandu you can

a) drop the goods at Himaland Adventure Treks, Thamel, Kathmandu (6 min. walk from Kathmandu Guest House. See the location map). The company is kind enough to provide storage space.Remember to write "For Zandra Eccles" on the bag.

b) leave the goods at the reception of the hotel you stay and contact me or Mr. Tilak Lama (Tel.: 9841 248035) to pick them up. Again, remember to write "For Zandra Eccles" on the bag. (Tilak is happy to pick up the parcels and store them for me. In the time when I can no longer go over there myself, he will continue to look after the goods and distribute them between the DNC, Olga's Orphanage, Street Children and remotevillages.)

c) Take the goods directly to Disabled Newlife Centre or the Childrens' Future Organisation. If you have problem getting there, please ring my taxi driver Deepak on his mobile number (971)9841 248035 and he will be able to take you to visit either or both places.

      4) Take part in volunteer work

Refer to the Volunteer Section for several organisations I've been personally involved. They welcome the services of volunteers with experience in many different fields. Contact them or drop me an email if you need more information or advice.
