Dangers with Aromatherapy

Because essential oils are natural products, it is highly concentrated and volatile. Improper use may result in burns, allergic reactions, headache, or nausea to the user. Therefore, it is important to follow the instructions and certain safety guidelines.

  • Essential oils may be harmful if taken by mouth and should not be swallowed.

  • Essential oils can result in skin rash or irritation, and they should be diluted with carrier oil before use.

  • Allergy may happen due to contamination or by the elements of the herbs from which the oil is obtained.

  • Some oils are thought to have dangerous effects on the brain, liver and kidney and can raise the chances of getting cancer with long-term use.

  • Sage, rosemary and juniper oils may lead to the contraction of the uterus when taken in large doses, and it is forbidden during pregnancy due to the high chance of getting spontaneous abortion.

  • Infants and young children less than 5 years may be very sensitive to the effects and side effects of essential oils.

  • Essential oils are not allowed in asthma, heart conditions, hypertension, cancer, epilepsy, and frequent allergic reactions.

  • The smell of the oil may cause nausea, vomiting or negative emotions to very ill patients and patients undergoing chemotherapy.
