History

Though Nivoch II has been known of for many years, it was not settled until the early 24th century, when Bajorans fleeing Bajor found the planet and made a small settlement on top of a mountain they called Ghe’tor. The vicinity of the Badlands and the possibility of strife between three major powers made it an undesirable destination. The Cardassians made several colonial attempts, but they all failed due a lack of settlers.

The Ghe’tor colony soon started to attract Bajoran resistance fighters and refugees and hence became a target for the Cardassian military. In 2335 the Ghe’tor mountain was completely destroyed together with all its buildings. The few survivors were executed by the Cardassian military.

Only in the 2350s would new people seek refuge on Nivoch II. This time it were Maquis sheltering from the Cardassians. They developed an underground base on the planet which was destroyed in 2355 when the Cardassians once again found their enemies on the planet. The Cardassians proceeded to place an orbital scanner that would warn them of humanoid life on the planet.

Though during the Federation-Cardassian war and the Dominion War members of each faction briefly sought refuge on Nivoch, the strategic vulnerability of the planet made settling undesirable and it claimed by the Cardassians.

In 2378, in an effort to improve Federation-Cardassian relations and help the Cardassian empire rebuild, a small outpost called G2 was build on Nivoch II. This Outpost was to aid the Cardassian border defence against pirates and profiteers. In 2380, the U.S.S. Falcon NCC-79800 (Defiant-class) was assigned to the Outpost as well For the next 2 years, the Falcon and Cardassian joined effort was able to greatly reduce the pirate activity and after the Falcon’s destruction, the project was ended.

The question what to do with the planet and whether a lack of Starfleet presence in the region would not threaten to destabilize it again. In the Nivoch-agreement of February 2383 it was decided that the Outpost G-2 would be again put to use by Starfleet to continue to safeguard the area and allow for a colony to be established on the planet. This was decided as the Cardassian military lacked the capacity to man the Outpost and Starfleet had most trust by both the Zhenkethi and the Cardassians.

In the months following, a small orbital platform for docking ships was constructed in Nivoch II’s orbit and the foundations of the colony were established.
