CONFLICTS,
VERY IMPORTANT FOR BIG FANS
1st.
There are currently two major theories
surrounding the Angels. I believe the one I'm going to tell you now, but I refer
to the other one throughout this FAQ just for the sake of putting in different
opinions. However I believe this to be true.
Angels, Humans, Adam, Lilith, and Lilum
collectively make up humanity in NGE. To understand these concepts, you have to
widen what you believe humans and humanity are. We are both formed from the same
first "Angel," Adam. There are 17 Angels and the Angels represent the
17 trials of humanity. Angels are humans without the form of a human, this is
stated by Misato. Lilim are also Angels. They are formed from Lilith, the second
Angel. Adam and Lilith were originally one creature until they were split by the
Lance of Longinus which caused the First Impact.
2nd.
The 2nd Impact in my belief was when the
Katsuragi found Adam in Antarctica and put him into his embryonic form. This
caused the Apocalypse (what's thought to be the apocalypse in some people's
minds) which released the 17 Angels.
These are the only conflicts I could think up
off the top of my head, please tell me if you have a conflict with anything else
on this FAQ/Info Section.
General Questions
What is Neon Genesis Evangelion?
Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the greatest
animes ever created by man. It is produced by Gainax. It takes place in the year
2015, 15 years after the 2nd Impact, which was said to be a meteor collision
with the earth, melts the polar caps and decimates the population of the world.
NGE follows the lives of special children chosen to pilot giant humanoid robots
(very loose description, don't want to give anything away) called Evangelions.
The Evas are the only hope for the salvation of humankind from the threat of
annihilation from an alien species called Angels. With its many plot twists,
VERY complex storylines, and mythical background, Evangelion is definitely one
of the most amazing animes ever.
Where can I get NGE and how much does it cost?
You can get the DVD's and videos pretty much
anywhere now. I've seen them at Funcoland and Planet Comics and I'm sure any
store, online or not, that carries anime will most definitely have them. They
basically run you about $25-30 US. There are currently 26 episodes available on
DVD and VHS. I strongly recommend you buying the DVD's over VHS as would anyone
else. Currently, none of the movies are available in the US for sale, but the
first DVD will be released in September of 2001. There are 3 movies: Evangelion:
Death and Rebirth, End of Evangelion, and Revival of Evangelion. I don't know if
any new evangelion installments are in the works. I doubt it, but who knows. I
think you might be able to find an exact date on the movie release at ADV's
website. www.advfilms.com. I have seen
EoE on ebay for sale, its translated from Mandarin I believe and I'm not sure of
the quality. It runs for like $10-$20 usually.
How many episodes/movies are there in English?
26 episodes available on VHS (don't know how
many videos) and DVD, 8 DVD collection. The 3 movies aren't available subbed
like the rest of the series. It might be possible to get them on EBay or at some
good anime stores.
Questions Regarding the Show
What do the organization names stand for?
The organization names come from German. NERV
is nerve. Gehrin is brain. Seele is soul.
What is Gehrin?
It is the original organization that created
the Magi system. They were eventually disbanded and all their employees, except
for one, were put under the direction of NERV. Watch the show to find out who
the one was.
Who is the big white guy on the crucifix?
The giant on the cross in terminal dogma which
is below NERV is Lilith. It is originally believed to be Adam when Kaji shows
Misato what's going on, but we are told otherwise when Kaworu reaches terminal
dogma.
Who are Adam and Lilith?
Adam is the small embryo that Kaji brings from
Germany in one of the early episodes. The entire UN Pacific Fleet isn't meant to
protect the Evangelion from attack. They are mearly an escort and Unit 02 is
there to protect Adam from attack from the Angels.
Lilith is the giant on the red cross found in
terminal dogma below NERV.
Who killed Kaji?
For those of you disallusioned souls that think
that Kaji is still alive, or are hoping for it, you are wrong, get over it. I'm
sure there are some people that don't want to believe that he's dead, but too
bad. Kaji was killed by a member of SEELE or NERV. It was just some thug that
was sent to kill him for spying and releasing Fuyutsi.
What happened to Touji after the
"accident?"
As seen in one of the goriest fights of the
entire series, Touji's entry plug was crushed by Unit 01 while he was inside. He
was recovered alive and is shown in the next episode in the same hospital room
as Shinji. He is visited by Hikari and it is shown that his left leg is missing
in a very short camera view change. I didn't notice it the first time and only
noticed it when I was told about it. The short scene lasts only about a second
or two. It is episode 19 I think, definitely on the 6th DVD disc for those of
you who want to check it out. Contrary to some people's beliefs, his arm isn't
gone. It is there intact.
How come Eva 01 can move without power?
Eva's aren't really robots. They are created
from Lilith like the angels and have a mind and soul. I believe the power is
used to either give it a jump start or to power the controls that NERV uses in
the plug and to restrain the creature. This is my opinion. Something inside the
true creature snaps when it is attacked and it goes berserk. It isn't really
controlled by the pilot at all anymore and is amazingly devastating.
How did Unit 01 get into the "shadow"
of the angel after falling into the Sea of Dirac?
This is very complicated to understand such an
insignificant moment in the series. Well, not totally insignificant, but it
would make no difference whether he destroyed the angel from the sea itself or
from the shadow. The Sea of Dirac is somewhat like another universe. Now, I
myself don't know quantum physics and theories on dimensions to well, somehow I
doubt that the creators really meant for this to be thought in the way I'm about
to explain this phenomenom. So, if we believe this is truly a parallel universe,
then spacial coordinates would have to be the same. If Eva 01 was able to move
around in the other universe, and moved about 50 feet above the original
coordinates of where he entered, then it is accepted that he would re-enter from
inside the shadow. I know this is difficult to understand and all, but deal with
it. I truly just believe that the creators would just think it cool if the Eva
would destroy the Eva that way as the big ball in the sky is really the only
tangible aspect of that angel.
How did the 2nd Impact occur?
The 2nd Impact occured when the Katsuragi
expedition accidentally or unknowingly awakened Adam, the first angel. It
occured in the Antarctic and Misato was the only survivor of that expedition.
What are the two moons?
There are two moons, these are not literal
moons as in outer space. They are known as the black and white moons. The White
moon is in Antarctica where Adam was originally found by the Katsuragi
expedition. It is in a big hole basically. The Black moon is the Geofront where
NERV is held. The Geofront was not built by NERV. It was found there and Tokyo-3
was built over it and NERV inside. Lilith is in the Black Moon.
Very Informative Tidbits and Religious/Mythical
background
Lance of Longinus, Who's Longinus?
The lance is the big spear that is stuck inside
Lilith beneath NERV. It is used in one of the very late episodes to destroy an
Angel that is outside range of any conventional weapon that NERV had. Ayanami
uses it to destroy the 15th angel. SEELE needed it for their version of the
Human Instrumentality Project, but Gendo had other plans and purposely used it
to destroy the 15th angel because he knew it would go into lunar orbit and
become unrecoverable because of its' massive size. The lance is by far my
favorite weapon of the series. It's quite amazing, and that episode is probably
my second favorite behind episode 24 with Kaworu.
The following text was taken from evafaq.com.
Please give them a visit if you have a chance. Its an informative site. If you
don't feel like reading this whole damn thing, here is the summary. St. Longinus
was a soldier who put a spear into the side of Jesus while he was hanging on the
cross he was crucified on. Longinus was nearly blind at the time he did this and
some of the blood and water that fell from Jesus' body went into his eyes and
healed him. He then knew that He was the Son of God. Longinus converted to
Christianity, left the army, and became a monk. He was later beheaded for his
beliefs and his own blood hit the governor's eyes and also his eyes. Supposedly
his lance is in one of the four pillars over the altar in St. Peter's Basilica.
"St. Longinus is the centurion who pierced
the side of Our Lord while He was hanging on the Cross. St. Longinus, who was
nearly blind, was healed when some of the blood and water from Jesus fell into
his eyes. It was then he exclaimed "Indeed, this was the Son of God!"
[Mark 15:39]. St. Longinus then converted, Left the army, took instruction from
the apostles and became a monk in Cappadocia. There he was arrested for his
faith, his teeth forced out and tongue cut off. However, St. Longinus
miraculously continued to speak clearly and managed to destroy several idols in
the presence of the governor. The governor, who was made blind by the demons
that came from the idols, had his sight restored when St. Longinus was being
beheaded, because his blood came in contact with the governors' eyes. St.
Longinus' relics are now in the church of St Augustine, in Rome. His Lance is
contained in one of the four pillars over the altar in the Basilica of St
Peter's in Rome."
What are the Dead Sea Scrolls and what are
their importance in this series?
The Dead Sea Scrolls are actually real life
scrolls that were found in around the 1950's in 11 caves surrounding the Dead
Sea. They are considered the greatest archaelogical find in this century. The
scrolls themselves are made of either copper, a form of paper, or leather and
are the oldest known biblical scrolls. Some date back 2000 years and contain
very important information regarding the Old Testament and have prophecies
inside too. They are valued amazingly and I don't think any of them are on
display right now anywhere. Actually, I think a few of them may be on display in
Italy or something like that. Photographs have been released so they could be
studied and the last time they were displayed was in 93 or 94 I believe.
Evangelion uses the myths surrounding the
scrolls and made up their own myths in order to make for a better story. SEELE
refers to them frequently and they are also the things that prophecize the
coming of the Angels. I also think that they refer to the scrolls when
mentioning the Human Instrumentality Project too. They are of great importance
because they add to the mystique of the show and add some true historical
background to the storyline of the anime.
When was the first impact?
The first impact occured a few billion years
ago when a gigantic meteor struck the Earth and actually created the moon from
the Earth. This is shown in one of the earlier episodes and it is actually
believed by many to have actually occured in real life. I myself believe this
happened even though my opinion means jack when it comes to something like this.
This is one thought of what the first impact was, I don't believe this one. For
my true belief of what the first impact was go back to the top and to conflicts
and read about the angels' creation.
What is the Human Instrumentality Project?
This is my opinion somewhat based on fact. The
HIP is meant to create the perfect being. It is the project that will take every
piece of humanity and return it to just one single being that is truly perfect.
A God in many aspects.
