PROJECTS

 
1. Livelihood Programs
 Since August 2000, there has been a continuous effort to train women in Barangay CAA to gain skills that will help them attain economic independence. There are forty-one (41) graduates under this program on the following courses.
 
A. Dressmaking Course - 13
B. Stuffed Toys Making - 14
C. Cosmetology - 19
D. Food Trade - 14

Classes are held at Zonta Building three times a week. Courses are continuously conducted by the Manpower on Wheels Foundation and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for a duration of one and a half month each. The graduates of each course are hosted to a graduation dinner during the club's General Membership meeting.
  
E. Business Start up course

Twenty Five (25) women also from Barangay CAA underwent a business start up course last July 19-23, 2000. This project was jointly sponsored by ZCLP, the Zonta Foundation Philippines and TESDA. Project chairperson was past president Flor Riguera.
The successful top five graduates where given P 5,000.00 start up capital for their small businesses :
 
     They are as follows :
»Luz Jalandoni - Repacking of condiments and peanut butter making
Monica Juaton - Sari-sari store
»Patricia Delos Reyes - Sidewalk vendor of banana cue, Pancit macaroni soup, champorado sold mostly to tricycle drivers.
»Cordola Galindo - Preparing and selling native snacks or "kakanin" such as suman and turon. Lately she has accepted orders for "biko" and puto.
»Rafaela Binos - Pork selling which meant buying a whole pig at the butcher's at the public market, then chopping the meat, selling it to neighbors. She plans to sell her meat to the market where customers pay cash unlike her neighbors where she gets paid weekly.
»Juliet Bernardo - Biscuit- repacking business and existing junk shop.

 

F. Business Improvement , Survival and Enhancement Course
Last January 15- 19,2001 thirty- five (35) lady entrepreneurs attended a seminar workshop hosted by the Zonta Foundation, Inc. 
  
  
2. Education and Literacy Program

The club is in the process of building Barangay libraries or reading centers in three (3) barangays in the City. These reading centers shall house reading materials such as books and reference materials on women topics and concerns. A computer data file with  Internet connection to the National Library shall also be available. This project aims to reach the women at home. The club believes that access to information will empower them on topics like - general information, basic health education, human rights and livelihood training opportunities. The reading centers shall make the women aware, responsive and educated.
 
The project was launched last February 21, 2001. A ceremonial signing of a memorandum of agreement was concluded with the  National Library, Zonta Club of Las Piñas and the 20-Barangay chairmen of the City. Fund rising for the project was via ticket sales from the "Search for Little Miss Las Piñas" contest.
 
Beneficiaries of the program are barangays Talon 4, Talon 5 and Almanza 2.
 
Inauguration and blessing of the new reading centers is set November 15,2001. 
 
 
3. Club Archives
ZCLP has completed the construction of its archives in order to house its documents. This situated beside the Zonta Building at Malunggay St. Barangay CAA Las Piñas City. The project will be inaugurated on November 15, 2001.
  
  
4. Medical Mission
Last August 18, 2001 the club sponsored a medical mission for women of Sitio Pugadlawin in Barangay Almanza 2. Entitled "Alay sa Kababaihan, Malusog na Pangangatawan" the project offered free papsmear and bust examination to at least 250 ladies. With Doctors and Medical practitioners from the Las Piñas integrated District Hospital, lectures on proper reproductive health were also conducted. Project chairman is Zontian Kaye Rivera.

5. Christmas gift giving for the poor children of Las Piñas.
     Members of the club hosted a Christmas Party  for the less fortunate children at the Villar Tree Nursery last December 11,2000.  At least 200 kids were given an afternoon of gift and games.  A local McDonald's outlet catered the food and brought in their mascot to the delight of the children. The party was covered and featured on Channels 9 and 16 in their regular kids show entitled “Pen-pen de Sarapen”.  Zontian Minerva “Baby Sison” chaired the affair.

6. Launching of Barangay Libraries

Fund Raising Campaign
ZCLP President Cynthia Villar  spearheaded a fundraising campaign to support the establishment of Barangay libraries/reading centers.  Entitled “Search for Little Miss Las Piñas”, the project was launched February 12,2001 at the Villar Tree Nursery.  This is a popularity contest participated in by selected candidates  from all the 20 barangays in the City.  The ZCLP has sought the support of all the Barangay chairmen.  They have invited participants and help in the sale of tickets. The final counting of ballots for the “Search” was held during the regular April 16, 2001 of the Club.  Candidates gamely participated in the Talent Search.  The kids were also treated to free rides at the Metropolis Children’s  Park in Alabang, Muntinlupa City right after the program. Coronation of all the winners  was held on May 4,2001, at the verdant Covered Court in Las Piñas.  Crowned Little Miss Las Piñas was Janine Ilejay of Barangay Talon V. Second place  was Elshai Marie Bombasi of Barangay Talon  IV and third place was Katia Alora Paz of Barangay  Pamplona II.
The club was able to generate P75,000.00 from the ticket sales.  Three barangays were chosen priority beneficiaries of this project.

7. Club Website
 ZCLP has decided to put up its own webpage.  This is to make information about the club easily accessible to everyone.  Materials are being gathered and prepared for this purpose.  Project Chairman is Zontian Terry Palacios, who is also President of STI, Las Piñas City. This shall be available starting Nov. 15,2001. With web address at  http://www.oocities.org/zontalp.
 
 
8.  Kapihan sa Zonta and UN Day Celebration

Together with the Zonta Club of Laguna, ZCLP hosted last October 11,2001 “the Kapihan sa Zonta” for Areas I and V. This gathering likewise commemorated the United Nations Day held at Wack Wack Golf and Country club, the theme was Volunteerism and Patriotism.  Special guests were Secretary Richard Gordon of the Department of Tourism and Red Cross Governor Lulu Casas-Quezon.  National Television Newscaster Justine Espina moderated the affair.  Starbucks of Rustan’s served coffee.

 

 

 
 
10. “Z” Club
 ZCLP Member Carol Balotro has started ground works for the establishment of our “Z” Club.  Initial talks with Elizabeth Seton School in BF Resort Village, Las Piñas City had been set for this undertaking.

2. United Nations Day

3. Women's Day Celebration
Three vital women organizations the UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women), ZONTA Foundation, Phil., Inc., and Zonta International District 17, joined together to celebrate International Women’s Day at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel last March 07, 2001.  The celebration featured awards to the outstanding women micro entrepreneurs who had been assisted by a Zonta Club, and to the Zonta Club with an outstanding livelihood project.
The Outstanding Micro Entrepreneur Award went to Ma. Luisa R. Magno, a widow with three children aged 6 to 15, who make necklaces and bracelets out of beads and shells as home business in Zontaville, Barangay Bagong Nayon II, Antipolo City.  She is a beneficiary of the Zonta Club of Mandaluyong- San Juan which assisted her with a P5,000 micro-credit facility.  Runner-up as Outstanding Woman Micro entrepreneur was Marilyn G. Astrera of Barangay Platero, Biñan Laguna, a beneficiary of the Zonta Club of Laguna.  Marilyn produces leather glove in her name with the help of her three children and her husband, a jeepney driver.  Her product is now being exported to Taiwan, thanks to the P5,000 micro-credit assistance of the Zonta Club of Laguna, which enabled Marilyn to expand her business.
DSWD Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman, who represented President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo congratulated the awardees.
Winner of the Outstanding Livelihood Project award was the Zonta Club of Pateros- Pasig, while runner-up was Zonta Club Makati.
4.  Zonta International Convention
