Red
Museum
Let me preface this by saying that I have, to this point,
been remiss in omitting this episode from my mytharc menu.
The reason is as simple as it is lame. I don't have this
episode on tape so couldn't go back to view it for a
synopsis. Not having the FX channel, I am still waiting to
see this episode again in syndication but in the meantime I
have cobbled together the summary from the official site and
guide and from memory. This one is important not just for
the re-appearance of Crew Cut Man but for the mention of
Purity Control, a term encountered by Scully in the season
one finale. So, on with the show.
This episode takes place in Wisconsin and involves the
abduction of local teens that is thought to be related to a
religious cult, the Church of the Red Museum. The teens go
missing and, when returned in a drugged stupor, have the
words "He is One" or "She is One" written on their backs.
When blood tests are run on one of the returned victims, a
hallucinogenic drug is found in her system and blame falls
at the cult leader's door since he is a doctor. Of course,
the haste to blame the cult is a mistake and upon further
investigation Mulder and Scully are lead by a local farmer
to evidence of strange, genetically engineered hormonal
experimentation taking place on cattle. The excuse offered
by Scully, that the experiments might be government
sanctioned and considered safe, is not enough for the local
farmer.
Later that night, a plane carrying the local doctor whose
patients included the abducted teens, crashes killing the
doctor and the pilot. At the scene, the agents find the
doctor's briefcase stuffed with money, a vial containing an
unknown liquid, and a printout listing the names of the
victims and their families. The doctor who had treated the
teens since they were born and given them "vitamin shots"
seems to have been involved in a slightly more sinister and
financially lucrative form of family practice.
As the crimes escalate, the sheriff's son is abducted but
instead of being found in the forest in a daze, he turns up
dead. When the man behind the abductions is discovered, he
admits to his illness and the abductions but not the
killing. He tells them that the local doctor had been
paying him to inject the cattle with the unknown liquid in
the vial. This same mysterious liquid had also been
injected into the teens for years under the guise of vitamin
shots. The abductor says that his victims had become
monsters due to the injections and tests on the substance
reveals alien DNA. Scully recognizes this as the Purity
Control substance found in the flask in the episode "The
Erlenmeyer Flask".
When Crew Cut Man, Deep Throat's executioner, is spotted
driving through the town, the pieces begin to fall into
place. This is most likely a rogue government experiment
such as the one referred to by Deep Throat in "E.Flask".
The agents believe that Crew Cut Man is in town to do a
clean-up job and one of his targets was the sheriff's son
whose body contained evidence in the form of the Purity
Control substance. Heading to the meat packing plant with
the sheriff, they find evidence of Crew Cut Man in the
gasoline spilled throughout the plant. In the ensuing
chase, the sheriff shoots the Crew Cut Man as revenge for
the death of his son. When the body is examined later, they
find that the Crew Cut Man has no identity. In addition,
there is no further evidence as to the chemical makeup of
the fluid injected into the townsfolk. The case is left
unsolved.
