4-0 JK and Outlaw Get Some Help from Opponents
In many leagues, these guys were available free agents. In our league, ALL of these guys started this week. |

Oh so close. Stroupe was oh so close to beating JK. Billy Davis down at the
inch line...Deion's near score on a punt return.... Frank Sanders on the
splinter squad.
JK finally discovered Jermaine Lewis. Three weeks - Three TDs on their bench. This week two more, but in the lineup. I think he passed the audition. The SR of Baltimore is the third different QB used this year in their games: Det (1&2) NYJ (3). They also briefly had Miami and Buffalo, but never started them. |

Sometimes you act on impulse and stick a guy in there. Outlaw was faced with
the decision when he called in his lineup on Sunday from the Phoenix airport.
"What the heck, I'll play Derrick Mayes - Robert Brooks is questionable."
On such decisions, a championship is built. Mayes scored three times.
Talbot on the other hand has one of those teams where guys score, but do not necessarily get to start. The highlight of Terrance Mathis scoring one of his two TDs, the juggling near-interception, makes Talbot wince. The curse of a team like this... is the splinter squad. |

The bad news is Jackson's QB woes continue. The good news is that it does not
seem to hurt him. Jackson scored exactly 1 TD this week
among the three QBs on his roster...Jerry Rice's complaints about not getting
the ball were heard loud and clear as he scored 15 points. The great swindle
of '98 is paying off with Fred Taylor going in.
Ice cold BUD...Priest Holmes is arriving a week too late to help BUD avoid 0-4. Another Baltimore player is being "kennisoned" to borrow a term from 1996: Michael Jackson has 0 TDs while Jermaine Lewis has 5. However, good news is just around the corner. Jones/Klingman is next on the schedule. JK is very friendly to winless teams. They were the first victims of 0-10 Howrigon in 91 and 0-10 Barry in 95. |

After absorbing a put down from Wallace stating that points-per-game is a true test of manhood in the BRFL, MOS and Hale tack up a 65 which rockets them past Wallace. The Vikes QBs continue their tear with 4 scores and their starting back field averaged two TDs. "You guys are being carried by your defense" said another critic. Not true this week. Seattle's league leading "D" didn't score. |
42 DP OAK Q 6, JElam 8, TBrown 0, IBruce 0, KMcCardell 6, AMurrell 6, JStokes 6, DEN 10
|
Before kickoff, Peil removed Terry Allen from his starting line-up and inserted JJ Stokes. The net loss was one point. Issac Bruce was started but did not play again this week. So, he's won two straight despite his opponent having a "power play". About the only good news for Wallace this week was that Terrell Davis' picture is on the United Way Football Schedules. |

On Friday, Best confessed to Jackson: "This is probably the worst line-up I've
ever fielded". Three players had never started an NFL regular season game
and had never scored. With two players injured and three on a bye, Best rolled
the dice and acquired Robert Holcombe and Jay Graham. When Graham lost his
job to Priest Holmes, Unable to drop Graham, Best SR'ed Holmes... The result was
a franchise record 85 points and the eighth BRFL game to surpass 80.
Barry, who owns the all time record with 90, once again scored respectable forty plus, but did not win. The 128 combined points is a BRFL record. |

Week 5 Preview
October 2 The EliteOutlaw 4-0Mosakowski-Hale 3-1 How about that Outlaw! first he drafts the best line-up in the league and then loses a couple guys to injuries and demotions and has two of the biggest sleepers emerge in Ed McCaffery and Derrick Mayes. MOS has one blemish on his record (a loss to Outlaw). It was after that loss he was criticized as being two dependant on the fortunes of Minnesota and back-up QB Randall Cunningham. So the next week, Cunningham has a monster day and two overlooked players in his starting lineup, Donnell Bennett and Marshall Faulk, emerge. Close but no CigarJones-Klingman 4-0Jackson 3-1 There is a flaw in each of these teams. That is the Quarterback position. Both these teams have gone through QBs like the Redskins have gone through kickers. JK is understandable. He drafted QBs late, so it figures that you don't get the cream of the crop. Jackson took two early, and both of them have been busts. Particularly Kordell Stewart. However the rest of JK's and CJ's line-ups are solid and if they solve their QB problem, look out. Sleeping GiantsBest (2-2)Talbot (1-3) Czupryna (1-3) These teams have been known to put up the points, but have been in the losing end of close games. Talbot lost 62-60. No one has ever scored 60 points and lost. Best lost twice on late Sunday Night TDs. CZ has scored in the 40's Three Times and lost each one! These three teams have top shelf QBs and better than average lineups. Expect their luck to change. Mired in MediocrityStroupe (2-2)Peil (2-2) Barry (1-3) "Air McNair" has been only "Fair McNair" and has been keeping Stroupe hovering around the 30 points a week mark. Which should more times than not lose a game for you. Peil is in this category because he has happened to win his last two games, but he is not lighting up the scoreboard. He is getting production from his backs...as if he cared about backs. Peil and Barry have a common problem. Both undefeated teams are in their division, so the hill to climb is high. For AB, only his QB sits among the league leaders and it may not much longer if it continues to be Bubby Brister rather than the injured John Elway. Need Serious HelpWallace (1-3)Deitrich (0-4) Every week, the Leon Johnsons and Priest Holmes of the NFL will find a home on these two teams. The secret is you need to get enough of them to field a team. Each team has one lone first round superstar, but if you took a roll call of some of the disappointments so far this season, Curtis Martin, Rod Smith, Michael Jackson, Nap Kauffman, Mike Hollis... They'd be on these two teams. That is the bad news. The good news is that this is Wallace and this is Bud: two of the best owners in BRFL history. They may yet make it to the green, but they have used up all their mulligans. Predictions |
Wallace (1-3) vs Talbot (1-3) .................................... Talbot by 10 1/2 |
Wallace has been quiet on the waiver wire this week. Does he need to be reminded that not everyone makes the playoffs this year? You can't be "Mr December" if you can't make it through November. This is a juicy win for the underrated Talbot who has had his share of woe with Wallace. |
Best(2-2) vs Stroupe (2-2)............................................ Best by 14 |
Last week after he beat me in golf, Stroupe complained that I never pick him for these games. (He should be pleased with that). I said that I would pick him when he played me since he usually beats me.... Well, that was before I realized that I was playing him this week and before I scored 85 points last week. So in language my four year old would appreciate: Sorry Stroupie, your team is poopie, this time I'll win. |
Jackson (3-1) vs Outlaw (4-0) .......................... Outlaw by 8 |
Calvin is spared the agony of watching Kordell Stewart struggle. He is on a bye this week. Instead he gets Arizona home against Oakland. Now I have this dilemma. Today I had ice cream with Outlaw at this United Way thing, and I was telling him how good his team is. Calvin on the other hand has been good to me when I pick him to win. Calvin actually looks good on paper this week.... No, it's Outlaw. Herman Moore goes nuts against the Bears. |
Czupryna (1-3) vs Peil (2-2) ................................ CZ by 14 |
The "Geritol Bowl" ... Jacksonville is off, so CZ will be going with a backup. Speaking of back-ups, both these guys are... (Ba Da Boom) The extra spoonful of Metamucil will go to CZ and he'll win this game. |
Jones-Klingman(4-0) vs Deitrich (0-4) .............................. JK by 13 1/2 |
"Those that refuse to acknowledge history, are doomed to repeat it" I can't come up with the author of that quote. Let's say John Facenda, 1967 Green Bay Packers highlight video. This game has historical implications. JK has a history of losing to winless teams. In '91 they lost to 0-10 Howrigon. In '95, it was to 0-10 Barry. There is also something inherently wrong with JK being the undefeated team and Bud being the winless team. Forces other than the relative strength of these teams are at work here... Bud has to win. |
Barry (1-3) vs Mosakowski-Hale (3-1) ............................... MOS by 20 |
I used to get clever when picking this game and say that "Barry" will win. When MOS won, I'd say, I ment "Barry" Mosakowski... Now that we have hypenated MOS with Hale, I have to be more specific. "Ron" will win. |
