Christopher Young: HUSH

Thanks to the combined efforts of Douglass Fake and the own composer, this little musical jewel has been retrieved from the oblivion through a promotional limited edition similar in format and presentation to the utterly desired Species, Unforgettable, Virtuosity, Head Above The Water y Tales From The Hood, issued in 1996. Partially viewable as a "horror score", the subgenre on which inscribes this iconic picture could be precised as a "psychothriller", from which wonderful pages of this composer as those for Copycat (1995), Jennifer 8 (1992), Unforgettable (1995) o The Dark Half (1993), just to mention the more applauded, makes a very significative whole who has fed the next generations of film composers (Beltrami, Frizzell, Shearmur). As difference with the mentioned scores, Hush becomes a fortunate mixture of the elements of the musical psychohorror (obsesive ostinatos on the strings, and motives of impressive iteration) with those proper of the lyrical field (gentle melodies and beautiful gestures on the horns) which with marvellous and masterful writing composers as Goldsmith -Poltergeist (1982), Malice (1993)-, Elfman -Dolores Claiborne (1994), Extreme Measures (1996), Williams -The Fury (1978)- o Goldenthal - Sphere (1998)- had worked sucessfully. Arouse, then, a contained work but generous in themes and orchestral resolutions, from which the nineteen-minutes cue Hush is a key piece due Young's intelligence and skill in matters as the introduction, location and distribution of the spectre elements; chorus in latin that helps the progressive density of the strings, the synthetic effect of the "music box" which delivers a simple child-theme, the invisible piano which modules the sad tempo... every aspect of this cue, and in general of all the work, has been treated with care and devotion.
Very probably could be this Hush Young's more perfect wotk in the thriller genre, thanks to a wisdom that has been increased since those scarcely interesting beginnings -Pranks (1981)-, and that works definitively in a mature work worthy of a composer size as Herrmann's. D.R.C..
