Circumstantial evidence indicates Joel A. was the son of William & Ellen (or Eleanor), rather than the son of William's brothers, George and James. Joel A. appears to have married a Susan J._____, who is found in Sullivan Co., IN, in 1850 with 2 children, Malissey and William A. Joes A. was not listed in the household, but his assumed father, william, was the only Buckellew in Sullivan Co. old enough to be Joel A.'s father.

The first was the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 28; and the second was the S 1/2 of the N 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Sec. 29, all in T9N, R7W. Wit. by and acknowledged before William L. Buckallew, JP.

Joel A. and Susan J. were back in Clay Co., IN, in time for the 1860 census. A Melissa and Wm. A. were in the household (as were younger children), which tends to confirm the 1850 report. Joel A. and Susan J. were still there in 1870.
1863, 25 Dec.; Clay Co., IN, Deed: Joel A. (signed name) and wife, Susan J. (signed name) to James Hughes, all of Clay Co., for $400, 40 acres, the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 28, T9N, R7W. Ack. the same day before Wm. L. Buckallew. Rec. 16 Jan. 1864.
Joel died in 1872. There is a marriage of a Susan J. Buckalew to Stephen ?Boll in 1875. If this was Joel's widow, she apparently "took back" her Buckalew name prior to her death in 1903. Susan and Joel A. are buried in White Oak Grove Cemetery.
Their probable children, based on census reports would be: Melissa (b. 1846-47), William A. (1848-9_, Sarah E. (1851), George N. (1852-5), John W. (1858), James (1861) and Louis (1863).

About 1845 when Joel Austin was 23, he married Susan Jane Edmondson, daughter of John Edmondson & Sarah Grayson, in IN. Born on 4 October 1827 in TN. Susan Jane died in Clay Co., IN, on 27 January 1903; she was 75. Buried in White Oak Grove, Lewis Twp, Clay Co., IN.
