War of 1812 CLAIM OF SOLDIER FOR SERVICE PENSION Under the provisions of Sections 4736 to 4740, inclusive, Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9, 1878. N. B. - All the blank spaces in this form must be carefully filled up in accordance with the instructions on the back hereof; and from the best information possessed, or obtainable, by the applicant.

On this 21 day of August , A. D. one thousand eight hundred and 84 , personally appeared before me, a Deputy Clerk of the County Court , the same being a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid, (1) William Bratcher , aged 88 years, a resident of in the county of Grayson , in the State of Kentucky , who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical (2)William Bratcher, who served under the name of (3) William Bratcher as a (4) Private , in the company commanded by Captain John Hewet in the regiment of Infantry , commanded by Carrel , in the war of (5) 1812 ; that he (6) Enlisted at Nashville, Ten , on or about the 15 day of November , AD. 1812 , for the term of 12 months , and continued in actual service in said war for the term of (7) 1 month , and was honorably discharged at Nashville on the 15 day of December , A. D. 1812 That since his discharge from said service he has resided as follows, viz: (8) In Grayson County Kentucky . The following was his description at the time of his enlistment, viz: (9) low heavy Built Dark Brown hair , Blue Eyes He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which he may be entitled under section 4736 to 4740, inclusive, Revised Statutes, and the act of March 9, 1878, and hereby appoints, with full powers of substitution and revocation, CD PENNEBAKER & SON of Washington City , his lawful Attorney, to prosecute his claim.  

He also declares that he has heretofore made no application for (10) Pencion and that his residence No. , street, city (or town) of county of Grayson , and State of Kentucky , and that his post office address is Millwood Grayson County Kentucky

ALSO personnally appeared James Quisenberry aged 54 , years, residing at Millwood  in Kentucky , and ,aged years, residing at No. street, in , persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitles to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said  William Bratcher for 15 years and years, respectively; that they were present and saw him sign his name (or make his mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintenance with him that he is the identical person he represents himself to be. 

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 21 day of August , A.D. 1884; and I hereby ceritfy that the contents of the above declaration, &c, were fully made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing, including words erased, and the words added; and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosectution of this claim.

This form of fee contract is prescribed by the Commissioner of Pensions and approved by the Secretary of the Interior, July 8, 1884, under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved July 4, 1884. TO BE EXECUTED IN DUPLICATE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL COST TO CLAIMANT ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT

WHEREAS I, Wm Bratcher                                          late a                      in Company                War of 1812  , of the Regiment of                                 Volunteers, war of                                 having made application for pension under the laws of the United States. 

NOW THIS AGREEMENT WITNESSETH: That for and in consideration of services done and to be done in the premises, I hereby agree to allow my agents, C. D. PENNEBAKER and C. D. PENNEBAKER, Jr., doing business under the name of C. D. PENNEBAKER & SON, of Washington, D. C., the fee of TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS, which shall include all amounts to be paid for any services in the furtherance of said claim; and said fee shall not be demanded by or payable to my said agents, in whole or in part, except in case of the granting of my pension by the Commissioner of Pensions; and then the same shall be paid to them in accordance with the provisions of sections 4768 and 4769 of the Revised Statutes, U. S.

Bratcher         , the above named, who after having had read over to    him    in the hearing and presence of the two attesting witnesses the contents of the foregoing articles of agreement, voluntarily signed and acknowledged the same to be    his    free act and deed.

And now, to wit, this    25   day of       Oct      , A.D. 1884, we accept the provisions contained in the foregoing articles of agreement and will, to the best of our ability, endeavor faithfully to represent the interest of the claimant in the premises. We hereby certify that we have received from the claimant above-named the sum of    ------      dollars and no more              dollars being for fee, and sum of                     dollars being for postage and other expenses. And that these agreements have been executed in duplicate without additional cost to the claimant, as required by law in excess of the fee above-named, the said agents making no charge therefor.

THIRD AUDITOR'S OFFICE, December 13th, 1884

Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions with the information that the name of William Bratches, Bratcher or similar name is not borne on the rolls of Captains Trimble's and Strother's Companies, nor on the rolls of any Company in the Regiments of Tennessee Militia, War of 1812, on file in this Office to which the aforesaid Captains Companies belonged.

Washington D. C. Oct 27 , 1887 Sir: You are respectfully requested to inform this Office if you can do so without inconvenience whether William Bratcher who resided in your neighborhood in the year 1883 is still alive and was he generally believed by the neighbors to have served in the War of 1812. 

If Mr. Bratcher has deceased can you furnish the date of her death.  

Please return this letter for your reply in inclosed envelope for use in claim No. 34879 under Act of March 9 1878.

Mr. William Bratcher has deceased 1 1/2 years ago at a very old age also Mrs. Bratcher deceased years ago. Can not say or find out about War Record. General believe he did serve in War of 1812.
