Habitable Zone:
"The Spire is the reason that we live.
Everything can be reduced to that one truth. Its power stops the
furies from drowning us in nonexistance. But, perhaps as important,
its power also sustains us. The Spire gives the grass the energy
to grow, the sun the energy to shed its light, and even us - the energy
to be sentient. The Spire floods our world with its power.
If life attempted to exist too far away, it would not recieve enough energy,
and it would grow lethargic and die. There is no life in the Slow
Zone, excepting that which expends so little energy as to be insignificant.
Yet, if life lived too close to the source, it would be changed in horrible
ways - mangled by the power of the Spire. Beasts of the Near Zone
are said to eat nothing, and drink nothing, for they survive only by the
power radiating through them. It literally tears them apart in the
space of a few years, yet their species survive. In between these
zones lies the Habitable Zone - an area where life can take root and flourish.
Though it is not deadly to journey into either of the other zones for a
short time, in the long run, both will destroy a human life."
