The Mantaray Class Escort Vessel was first tested at the beginning of 2411, with the intention of replacing older Escort and Support vessels. The initial testing of the prototype was conducted at DS 101.

The Mantaray Class Escort Vessel was first tested at the beginning
of 2411, with the intention of replacing older Escort and Support
vessels. As the Cocoon Fleet emerged from a war against the Klingons, it's Fleetyards on Gaia saw the need for a new vessel that was small, yet carried and armament that would make it capable of dealing with considerably larger threats. The Mantaray is powered by reactors meant for vessels many times it's size. These provide the necessary resources for it's considerable armament, renegerative shielding and other, more conventional, armaments. It allows the vessel greater system redundancy and manoeuverability. These advantages come at a price. The ship is sparse, and is not suitable for extended service away from base or support craft. The Mantaray's speed is also limited to a maximum cruise of Warp 8.8, much slower than the most recent generation of Federation Starships. This is due, primarily, to the high power usage of the Hull Integrity field, which becomes unstable when strain is put upon it by high warp speeds. The high power output of the vessel also generates a distinctive warp signiture, that is nearly impssoble to hide above or below light speed. |
