| Thursday, October 08, 1903 |
| Got back to Silver Lake at noon. Took dinner there. the |
| second meal we have ate at a table since starting out. It was |
| very nice. Got to my cabin at 9 P.M. it was dark and rainy. |
| We had heavy packs, and was very tired when we got there. |
| We found that our shelter , (made of bows) had blown down. |
| such is the luck of two soldiers of fortune in Eastern Oregon. |
| Tuesday, October 13, 1903 |
| Overturf found the horse and got back with her this evening. |
| She is very poor. He found her 50 miles from here. |
| Monday, October 19, 1903 |
| We left my cabin and started North again for Overturf's claim. |
| It seems lonesome to leave it after getting it done. |
| Thursday, October 22, 1903 |
| We went to an ice cave to get ice for water which is about |
| seven & one half miles west of his claim. We went into the |
| cave about 55 rods before we got to the back end of it. |
| There is nine rooms in it - lots of ice in every room. We had |
| to take candles to light the way. This is the first cave I was |
| ever in. |
| Saturday, October 31, 1903 |
| We finished Overturf's cabin in the forenoon and in the |
| afternoon we cleaned things up and took a picture of it. I was |
| standing in the door. |
| Monday, November 09, 1903 |
| Overturf started for Bend at 6 A.M. and I started for Pineville |
| at 10 o'clock A.M. with the horse. After having a few minutes |
| of prayer. Got to Sand Shingle that day and changed there |
| and started a letter to Manda. I am on my way home at last. |
| Tuesday, November 03, 1903 |
| Camped under a juniper tree last night. No water, no grass. |
| Wolves howled all night. Did not sleep much. |
