| I went over to Rice Lake to look after the hay over there. The |
| fire came and I fought it all day alone and without anything to |
| eat. Saved nine stacks out of ten but it was the hardest day I |
| ever put in fighting fire a day I shall always remember. |

| I went over on the big island and went all over it. Had not |
| been over it for six years. Took my last boat ride I guess for |
| some time anyway on Farm Island Lake. |
| Friday, September 28, 1894 | 20 years afterward - |
| I started home once more. Got there the 29. they were all | 1914 - and sometimes |
| glad to see me. Sunday the 30 I went up to see Manda. We | don't yet |
| went to church and then I stayed until 12 o'clock. She |
| seemed glad to see me but would not say much. I don't know |
| what to make of her. |
