| I started breaking land on my own land for a farm. It seems |
| slow work getting started. |

| I began to get out sills for a house on my own land. If I only |
| had health I would feel more encouraged to go ahead and |
| make a home. |
| Tuesday, August 17, 1897 |
| Amanda was taken sick last night and brought forth a |
| daughter between 11 & 12 A.M. a lovely little thing. It was a |
| surprise in two ways. We expected a boy and did not expect |
| it for three weeks yet. |
| Wednesday, September 22, 1897 |
| Mother, Mr. Shatto, Kate & Birdie started for Hilda's place at |
| Farm Island lake. Got back Oct. 2. Had a very nice time. |
| Jim & I found two bees trees while they were gone. |
| Sunday, October 10, 1897 |
| It snowed last night about 4 inches. This is the earliest record |
| of snow falling ever known in these parts. |
| Monday, October 18, 1897 |
| Bro Joe came home from Burnsville. We were all very glad to |
| see him as he had been gone almost a year. |
| Tuesday, November 09, 1897 |
| I was on a jury for the first time. State of Minnesota vz. Johnny |
| Goulet. I was chosen foreman of the jury. J. Williams had |
| Goulet arrested for stealing 11 2 cent postage stamps. Jury |
| found him not guilty but Williams had the verdict set aside on |
| account that one Juryman (Laundeen) was not a citizen. |
