A major piece of local history is Castle Cornet. Built
on rocks just off the coast of St Peter Port, the castle has almost a thousand-year
history and played a part in the English civil war. Unfortunately the castle occupants and
Guernsey itself were on opposite sides! St Peter Port town suffered considerably as a
result.
A keep once dominated the high point of the castle.
This was destroyed when lightning struck stores of ammunition. Legend has it that the
governor was blown out of the castle and captured by amused islanders. The rocky area in the foreground was part of the causeway
originally used for access. It has long since been linked to the main island by a jetty. |

This close up of a section of the Castle battlements
shows how well-preserved the structure is. On the right-hand side you can see the English
Crown carved into the wall. On the left is the dark outline of the Castle's fully working
cannon. During the summer season the cannon is fired at noon every day (blanks only of
course!). |
