The XRL

By M.L. Morgan

Well, race fans, no one can ever say Nascar isn't creative. Restrictor plates, changing spoiler rules weekly, including putting one on the roof of the car, no less. Lowering engine compression. Common template for all manufacturers. Too many to detail in a short column.

Now the Cup cars are running a 36-race regular season. Sounds like saturation, doesn't it ? Apparently not, because a lot of fans are screaming for more races.

Several so called pundits have suggested split divisions, in which half of the teams would compete at a given track each Sunday, so there could be twice as many races. Race Views has written many pieces decrying this stupid idea. No race fan is willing to pay Nascar prices to see half of the top teams compete.

There is another, much more viable solution. You knew you could count on Race Views to devise it. We are always at the cutting edge. The Extreme Racing League - the XRL.

Our most recent brain-storm was inspired by the inception of the Extreme Football League - XFL. This league is being promoted by Vince McMahon of professional wrestling fame. Now, these folks are truly creative. Fake blood - rubber 2X4's, smoke and mirrors and hoopla that might make even Humpy Wheeler envious.

We have long suspected there is an open phone line between Professional Wrestling and Nascar. Very many similarities. From week to week you don't know who the good guy is. Just one of many similarities.

Let's get to the nuts and bolts of our proposal for the XRL. First of all, this would not be a split season - this would be a supplemental season. The XRL would race ONLY after the final race in Atlanta and before Speed Month starts at Daytona. The XRL would not be competition for the Nascar teams and their sponsors.

Secondly, we have to talk about rules. Very few rules. Cars must have shiny paint jobs with lots of decals. No need to put a number on the car because, just like professional wrestling, the winner will be determined before the race starts. The professional wrestlers don't wear numbers. Not since they got out, any way.

Nascar has always been very safety conscious, and it's one of the few things we like about Nascar. But that won't be a concern with the XRL because the wrecks will all be fake. Unlike the Nascar wrecks which are very real.

Nascar is idle this week so you can check out the XFL if you are that bored. But when the XRL comes around, and it will, remember you heard it first at Race Views.
