Dale Earnhardt
By M.L. Morgan
Well, race fans, it's another very sad day for all of us. Dale Earnhardt was killed today in a last-lap wreck at the Daytona 500. Very tragic. We hate having to write about these things.
Earnhardt had a very polarizing effect on race fans - you either loved him or hated him. No matter - he was a legend in his own time. And he did it on his own terms. He was the son of a racer, but he certainly wasn't given the keys to Nascar because of that. Earnhardt paid his dues, just as his Dad had done.
Earnhardt was known as the "Intimidator" but that was only his on-track personna. During a race, he could get a little severe. He had no tolerance for losing - or losers. Hard to find fault there.
It was awkward for Earnhardt to deal with his success. He was always more comfortable in blue jeans than a suit. But he was a pioneer in that he was wise enough to hire a P.R. company.
Race Views doesn't deal in philosophy. We deal in opinions. And sometimes, we deal in emotions. We are race fans.
But we are also human. We hate to lose Dale Earnhardt so young.
Sometimes the opinions and the emotions get mixed together. We are not ashamed to cry with the rest of our race fan friends.
