TRAC -The Rest Of The Story
By M.L. Morgan
Well, race fans, as usual, everybody and his brother has followed the Race Views lead and run with their stories about TRAC, this imaginary racing league which will compete with Nascar. We should have been a shepherd instead of a professional, unbiased reporter. Guess it is too late now.
Maybe we should be flattered, but we are not. We are upset. We will get over it. We are full-grown and we are accustomed to puppies like Speed Fx using our stuff.
The conception of TRAC was brilliant. The timing was excellent. Stock car racing is reaching more fans than ever - almost epidemic. If we don't have a new league, some potential fans will be left out in the cold. Can't have that.
Someone with vision must have determined some fans in Montana or Alaska - or wherever don't have any stock car races to attend, i.e., spend money at. So, a new league would be just the ticket. No pun intended.
So here comes TRAC. Of course you can't see them because they don't exist. But they insist they will be a viable entity in 2003. Maybe our Bruton Smith stock will be a viable entity in 2003. Maybe Uncle Mike will work for Nascar in 2003.
A lot of interesting and intriguing scenarios. None of which will ever happen. Race Views is very pragmatic. We recognize hogwash when we see it. Race Views has become kinder and gentler, as you know. We needed a synonym for b.s. and we found hogwash. We nearly puked. But we have to mush on into the mainstream. Some folks thought we were vulgar and they missed out on our message. Can't have that.
Let's cut to the chase. Race Views chose to find out how the very notion of a competing league was germinated. Wasn't very hard to do.
Our first stop was Daytona. Only stop we needed. TRAC is a fabrication from Nascar's cover-up division. We should have spotted this immediately, but we are sometimes slow.
As soon as we learned this, all the pieces fit together. As we said, sometimes we are slow. Stuff happens. Again kinder and gentler. We don't use the word shit any more. Trust me.
Nascar has bungled the Earnhardt accident investigation so badly they knew they needed a diversionary tactic. Nascar has absolutely no credibility with any thinking race fan. So they invented TRAC. "Let's get them talking about something else". Even fooled Race Views for a few minutes. But we are not puppies at Race Views. We saw through their subterfuge. Spare me, please. Sometimes we are slow - that's all. We always get to the truth.
You can tell your race fan friends where you read it first.
