Note: The first six editions of the Inside America Bulletin Board prior to March 1 are located in the Bulletin Board Archive.

Edition #10: April 30, 2001

Welcome back. Please note two new resources available to you as we head down the stretch, tackling our final book, Community and the Politics of Place, by Daniel Kemmis:

  1. My notes on Kemmis, to help you over the first several chapters;
  2. The essay assignment on the Kemmis book, now due on May 17 or before --- Thursday of exam week.

I will return the essays on Garreau in class on Thursday, May 3.

Edition #9: April 10, 2001

Due to my illness, some dates on our schedule has been modified:

The other important dates remain the same:

Edition #8: March 28, 2001

No snow. No missed classes. We proceed on schedule, heading south. Note some of my web stuff on the South, showing its distinctive character. Last year, I used the entire book, Dixie Rising, but since this is now out of print and unavailable, please check my notes on the convergence of the South and America. I have handed out excerpts, which we will discuss on April 2.

Please inspect the assignment for Part II of the course, our region-by-region tour, based largely on The Nine Nations of North America, by Joel Garreau. Keep these dates and assignments in mind:

Edition #7: March 11, 2001

Please note changes in the Schedule to accommodate the loss of class on March 5 due to inclement weather. The prior due dates for all assignment have remained the same, but we will start the regional tour of the South after the spring break, on March 26, and will shorten the time allocated for the Kemmis book, Community and the Politics of Place, by one class.

To prepare for the computer lab workshop in room E-114 on March 15, please review my my web searching, browsing, and citing helper page, SearchLight.

The assignment for Part II, the regional tour based largely on the Garreau book, The Nine Nations of North America, has been posted to guide your efforts in this part of the course. The essay is due on April 23.

Edition #7: March 8, 2001

Snow, again. More time to focus on the essay for Part I, due today. I anticipate returning all papers provided on-time by the lab on March 15. Speaking of the lab, make sure that you have assembled all the materials for your project, including the proposal. We will meet in E-114 on Thursday, March 8. Bring as much as you can carry to the computer lab.

You should have read the chapter on New England for today and the Foundry for next Monday, March 12. Go to the State-by-State Survey and download and examine the pages for these states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia. I will provide a draft of the essay for Part II in class today.
